The Vision BMW Alpina looks like an 8 Series in a nice suit

In case you forgot, the BMW 8 Series was discontinued in April 2026, but it appears to have made something of a comeback. The newly unveiled Vision BMW Alpina, a design study for the first Alpina model developed under the full ownership of the BMW Group, looks remarkably like an 8 Series, only more posh.

The brand states that the Vision BMW Alpina measures 5,200 mm long, making it longer than the 8 Series and closer in length to the 7 Series. This dimension hints that the concept could be the rumoured Alpina B7 currently in development, which is based on the luxury barge.

Beyond its lengthy footprint, the Bavarian outfit claims that the coupe can accommodate four adults in ‘genuine comfort’, and is outfitted with a V8 powertrain tuned to produce ‘the characteristic notes of the Alpina exhaust’. The concept also retains Alpina’s signature ‘Comfort+’ drive mode, an ultra-supple calibration that honours founder Burkard Bovensiepen’s philosophy that a comfortable driver is a faster driver.

When you strip away the artsy corporate jargon surrounding the exterior, the visual design of the Vision BMW Alpina looks as though the BMW iX were transformed into a sleek, two-door coupe. The front profile is complete with slim daytime running lights (DRLs) and headlights integrated directly into the bumper.

Of course, one cannot forget the signature kidney grilles. They are now defined by what BMW calls a ‘shark nose’, with the exterior of the car visualised around a single visual axis termed the speed feature line.

Moving to the rear, the company did not explain the design in depth, apart from stating that it features an ‘elliptical four-pipe’ exhaust and an ‘Alpina’ wordmark reimagined as a machined, polished metal element. Generally, as design studies go, the tail-end adopts an ultra-minimalist look. Those sleek, two-tiered taillights probably will not make the cut to production due to regulatory standards, unless BMW finds a way to make them roadworthy.

While the exterior remains firmly in the realm of a concept study, the interior of the Vision BMW Alpina looks production-ready since it shares the same BMW Panoramic iDrive interface and its quirky, parallelogram-shaped infotainment display. Like the exterior styling, BMW states that the cabin architecture is defined by a ‘six-degree speed feature line’ that divides the darker upper segment from the lighter lower segment. In true Alpina fashion, the upholstery features premium full-grain leather paired with stitching inspired by the brand’s classic ‘Deco-lines’.

Other fancy cabin features include clear-cut crystal used for the controls and metal components manufactured using a watchmaking-inspired bevelling technique. There is also a glass water bottle located behind the rear console. This comes paired with crystal glasses engraved with twenty Deco-lines and a six-degree rim profile, which perhaps provides the best drinking experience for your expensive liquor.

It remains to be seen if the first production car from Alpina after its acquisition by the BMW Group will actually look like this concept. While a four-seat, two-door coupe suggests that the Bovensiepen outfit is aiming directly at the ultra-luxury Rolls-Royce Spectre, it creates a confusing contradiction.

The first model widely reported to debut under full BMW ownership is actually the new B7, which is a traditional four-door saloon based on the 7 Series. Whether this design study hints at a completely separate flagship halo car, a second upcoming model, or simply a wild styling preview of the next B7 saloon remains entirely up in the air until the production car makes its official debut.
