Alpina now officially a standalone brand under the BMW Group

BMW Group has announced that Alpina is now officially positioned as a standalone brand within the Group. Now known as BMW Alpina, the new marque will be distinguished by a new wordmark, and will continue its mission of enhancing factory BMW models with a greater focus on exclusivity, refinement, and craftsmanship, the company says.

Alpina traces its roots back to the Bovensiepen family, who began elevating BMW vehicles in 1965. Over the decades, Alpina built a strong reputation for producing models that blended increased performance with a more luxurious character, catering to buyers seeking something beyond the standard BMW experience.

BMW Group is keenly aware of Alpina’s heritage. In a press release, the company stated that it aims to preserve Alpina’s unique identity while carefully evolving the brand for the future, ensuring it retains its distinctive positioning within the wider BMW portfolio.

BMW first acquired the rights to the Alpina brand in 2022, allowing operations to continue largely unchanged. Now, under the BMW Alpina name, the Group is taking a measured approach to its evolution, focusing initially on brand activation. This begins with a new wordmark, designed to convey “clarity, calm, and confidence.” Positioned centrally at the rear of vehicles, the wordmark is said to emphasise Alpina’s standalone status and independent character within BMW Group.

This approach mirrors the path taken by Maybach following its integration into the Mercedes-Benz portfolio in 2015, where the brand was repositioned as a more exclusive, range-topping sub-brand rather than operating independently. With BMW Group also owning Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, BMW Alpina could potentially benefit from the Group’s broader experience in the ultra-luxury segment as it defines its future positioning.

Speaking of which, it has also been reported that an all-new BMW Alpina B7 is under development. According to BMWBlog, the all-new model will be based on the upcoming facelift of the BMW 7 Series (G70 LCI). This new model should sit at the top of BMW Alpina’s lineup and is expected to start production sometime in the middle of 2026.
