All-new 5th-gen Nissan X-Trail unveiled: is this Nissan’s knight in shining armour?

Nissan has pulled the covers off a range of new models under its long-term strategic roadmap. Leading the line-up is the all-new fifth-generation Nissan X-Trail, which showcases the brand’s evolving design philosophy and is set to officially launch sometime next year.

Taking a look at the front, the all-new Nissan X-Trail features a far more modern and bolder design, abandoning the split-headlight setup of the outgoing model. The lower vent trim now extends into the V-motion front grille, creating a subtle X-shaped motif across the fascia.

Speaking of which, the grille itself adopts a hexagonal honeycomb pattern and is flanked by slim headlights and hexagonal daytime running lights (DRLs) that are integrated neatly into the grille for a sleek, understated look.

Along the sides, strong body lines move the design further away from the flowing theme of the previous model. From a distance, the profile almost forms a large hexagonal motif, with sharp contours running from the front doors to the rear, just ahead of the wheel arches.

For added detail, the D-pillar features additional hexagonal elements that provide contrast against the bodywork. Completing the look, the car rides on large wheels, each designed with six hexagonal spokes for a cohesive design touch.

As for the rear, Nissan hasn’t shown or presented the car in a clear position just yet. But from its trailer video, the shadowy silhouette of the car was adorned with a massive rear-lightbar, presented in a pixelated pattern — similar to how the Hyundai Ioniq 5 had pixelated lights.

Nissan has confirmed that the all-new Nissan X-Trail will feature its signature e-Power hybrid powertrain, already seen in Malaysia in models like the Kicks e-Power and Serena e-Power. Unlike a traditional parallel hybrid system, Nissan’s e-Power setup is a series hybrid configuration, where the engine acts solely as a generator to charge the battery, while the wheels are driven entirely by electric motors. This delivers an EV-like driving experience without the range anxiety associated with a full battery electric vehicle (BEV).

The e-Power system in the all-new Nissan X-Trail is expected to be an upgraded version of the third-generation setup that debuted in the Nissan Qashqai last year. In Malaysia, Nissan currently offers the second-generation e-Power system, first introduced with the Nissan Serena. The latest iteration is said to be even more efficient and refined than before.

While Nissan remains tight-lipped on the X-Trail’s exact powertrain details, the Qashqai e-Power provides useful context. In that model, a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine generates electricity for a 21.5 kWh battery, which in turn powers an electric motor producing 205 hp. The setup enables a claimed driving range of up to 1,200 km on a single tank, thanks to improved efficiency.

Although specifics for the X-Trail are still under wraps, Nissan has confirmed that it will be available with its e-4orce all-wheel drive (AWD) system, which adds a second electric motor on the rear axle. It will also be equipped with the brand’s ProPilot suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

The new Nissan X-Trail is part of the company’s broader plan to streamline its global line-up to 45 models, down from 56. Hopefully, this all-new fifth-generation model will make its way to Malaysia, as the current fourth-generation X-Trail has yet to be introduced here despite being nearly six years old.
