Nissan Aura Nismo RS Concept shows-off serious “aura” with upgraded looks and performance

Nissan is not in the strongest position right now and is looking to rekindle its glory days by expanding its Nismo lineup as part of the Re:Nissan plan. Leading that charge is the new Nissan Aura Nismo RS Concept, which has just been unveiled at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon. It might not quite be the face-melting track weapon enthusiasts have hoped for, but it certainly looks the part of a hot hatch worthy of the Nismo badge.

Based on the Nissan Aura Nismo that was unveiled a few years ago exclusively for the Japanese market, this new Nissan Aura Nismo RS Concept takes things up a notch. It now wears a proper wide bodykit, making the car 145 mm wider than before, while ride height has also been lowered by 20 mm — giving it that iconic performance car stance.

The concept also gains a host of aerodynamic upgrades aimed at increasing downforce and reducing drag. These include a more aggressive front splitter, side skirts, and a rear diffuser, the latter incorporating a motorsport-inspired bottom-mounted brake light.

Notable visual additions include a new Dark Matte Nismo Stealth Grey. Like the standard Aura Nismo, it retains the signature black racing stripe running down the bonnet, while large “RS” graphics are printed on both sides of the car. As expected of a Nismo model, it rides on bespoke Nismo wheels and features the marque’s signature red accents across the front lip, splitters, and rear diffuser.

Unlike the Nissan Aura Nismo it is based on, the RS Concept is more than just a cosmetic Nismo package. Under the skin, it is fitted with a high-output e-Power powertrain borrowed from the Nissan X-Trail Nismo. This setup combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, acting as a generator motor for a twin motor setup, making 204 hp and 330 Nm on the front axle and 136 hp and 195 Nm at the back, resulting in a combined output of 340 hp and 525 Nm.

Paired with Nissan’s e-4orce all-wheel-drive system, a widened track, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, Nissan claims the Concept delivers strong performance on both straight roads and winding sections. Braking performance has also been upgraded, with four-piston callipers up front and two-piston units at the rear, providing confident stopping power despite the car gaining around 100 kg over the standard Aura Nismo.

While the concept has yet to be confirmed for production, Nissan says it is closely monitoring public reception to determine whether it could be viable as a road-going model. The company also plans to continue developing and optimising the car with the aim of taking it into motorsport.

Speaking at the motor show, Nismo Motorsports and Customising (NMC) President and Chief Executive Officer, Yukata Sanada, said, “We are extremely pleased to unveil the Aura Nismo RS Concept as our first offering born from our collective NMC expertise.”

“Since the beginning, NISMO has pursued motorsports with a belief in pushing people and technology to the limit to achieve victory. That passion has driven innovation and peak excitement; and we’ll continue striving to deliver that to customers and fans worldwide,” he added.

No, it doesn’t feature a fire-breathing twin-turbo VR38 V6 producing 600 hp like the GT-R, but it is refreshing to see a new performance car embracing a highly complex hybrid system, at a time when the industry is increasingly focused on pure electric performance — as seen with the success of models like Hyundai’s N lineup and the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra
