Audi’s iconic five-cylinder engine turns 50 this year, and to mark the milestone, the brand tasked 14 of its youngest apprentices with creating a tribute. The result is the Audi GT50 Concept — an immaculate retro-futuristic beast inspired by the legendary Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO and the Audi 200 Quattro Trans-Am.
According to Stimme, as reported by Audi4Addict, the tribute project took nearly six months to complete. Audi assembled apprentices from various disciplines — including bodywork, automotive construction, and painting — who worked under the supervision of Audi’s Head of Automotive Technology, Logistics, and Business Management Training at its HQ in Neckarsulm, Timo Engler.

The concept began life as an Audi RS3 — unsurprising, as it remains the only five-cylinder model currently in production. Determined to make the finished car look nothing like the RS3, though, the team stripped it down completely, removing the interior, body panels, windows, and doors until only the bare chassis and structure remained.
That’s where the biggest challenge began: ensuring the concept remained structurally faithful to its inspiration. The outer body was redesigned from scratch, consisting of six main elements and constructed entirely from glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP).

Inside, the cabin follows true motorsport convention with a full roll cage. According to the report, the apprentices handcrafted the roll cage themselves to ensure the build stayed as authentic as possible to its original racing influences.
Finally, the team took the roof from an Audi 80 and re-engineered it to fit the body frame of the RS3. Through meticulous measurement and millimetre-precise fabrication, the roof was successfully integrated, giving the car its authentic performance sedan proportions.

Speaking to Stimme, Timo said, “I am extremely proud of the team. The ideas they have developed and implemented are truly remarkable.”
Amid Audi’s recent sales struggles, the brand appears eager to rediscover the bold, character-driven spirit that once defined it. Concepts like the recently unveiled Audi Concept C hint at a potential modern-day “Audi TT moment,” blending curvaceous forms with bold, industrial design cues.
While Audi has confirmed that the GT50 Concept will remain a one-off design study, it’s hard not to imagine how compelling a retro-futuristic sports car like this would look in showrooms — and how easily it could tempt buyers back to the four rings.
