First CKD GWM Wey G9 rolls off EPMB assembly line – early 2026 launch

GWM Malaysia announced that the first locally assembled (CKD) GWM Wey G9 has rolled off the production line at the EP Manufacturing Bhd (EPMB) plant in Melaka.

The roll-off ceremony was witnessed by the Chief Minister of Melaka, Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusoh, alongside senior representatives from EPMB and GWM Malaysia.

Set for launch in early 2026 with an expected retail price of under RM300,000, the GWM Wey G9 is now open for booking. Although this makes it the second plug-in hybrid (PHEV) MPV to enter the market, following the GAC M8 PHEV, the Wey G9 has the distinct pleasure of being the first “premium Chinese new energy MPV” to be locally assembled.

It also marks the first local assembly operations for the model outside of China. Locally assembled units from Malaysia will be exported to other markets, as GWM Chairman, Jack Wey, confirmed during a press conference at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025.

Powering the Wey G9 is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 150 hp and 240 Nm, mated to a four-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) and a rear-mounted electric motor. Combined, this setup delivers 442 hp and 642 Nm to an all-wheel drive setup.

This enables a 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h. Equipped with a 44.2 kWh battery pack, the Wey G9 offers a pure EV range of 170 km (NEDC) and a claimed combined range of 1,000 km (NEDC) on a single tank and full charge.

The GWM Wey G9 supports 6.6 kW AC charging. While the DC charging rate remains unspecified, GWM Malaysia states the MPV can replenish its battery from 30-80% in 26 minutes.

These 442 horses chauffeur occupants in a cabin featuring a seven-seat, 2-2-3 layout. The second row features captain chairs with ventilation, 10-point massage functions, powered adjustments, and a one-touch ‘zero-gravity’ mode.

Black Nappa leather upholstery comes as standard, though a Brown option is available for those seeking a different ambience. The captain chairs are paired with fold-out tables behind the front seats, ambient interior lighting, wood veneer trims, a 12.5-litre refrigerator, and a roof-mounted infotainment display.

Up front, the driver accesses vehicle functions via a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch central infotainment display. This differs from the Chinese domestic market model, which features a larger, integrated dual-screen setup.

Outside, the GWM Wey G9 bears a strong resemblance to the Denza D9, particularly at the front. As a boxy MPV, its design leans towards the conventional, contrasting with the futuristic aesthetic of the XPeng X9 or the Zeekr 009.

However, the Wey G9 has defining features, most notably at the rear. It sports a full-width LED taillight setup flanked by vertical clusters, each containing three distinct slats.
