The XPeng X9 line-up has grown to include a petrol combustion engine, a first for the brand after a decade of making purely electric cars. However, the engine in the new XPeng X9 PowerX will only serve as a range extender, with the new variant expected to launch in China by the end of 2025.
A report by Chinese automotive site Autohome details the range extended electric vehicle (REEV). The combustion engine will be a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-four delivering 150 hp. It will not be driving the wheels, instead only charging the 63.3 kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery pack. The fully electric X9 Standard Range comes with a slightly larger 84.5 kWh battery pack.
XPeng states that the 60-litre fuel tank in the PowerX will give it a total range of 1,602 km under China’s optimistic CLTC cycle. The Autohome report quoted two figures for the consumption; 0.15L/100km and 6.4L/100km, the latter likely with the battery drained.
Expect the electric motor in the PowerX to be identical to that found in the EV, making it good for 320 hp and 450 Nm of torque.
From a cosmetic perspective, not much has been altered with the X9’s futuristic design. The front now incorporates a larger air intake with an active grille shutter. Meanwhile, the rear also gets some minor changes. Completing the exterior are 20-inch multi-spoke wheels with self-righting centre caps.
On the inside, the new steering receives a ‘Drive Mode’ switch that should serve to rotate between various modes for the new powertrain. Apart from that, everything remains identical to the EV variant, including the 21.4-inch roof-mounted rear monitor, second-row captain’s chairs and a mini-fridge.
The PowerX is meant to be a global model according to XPeng, and it has tested the powertrain in 20 countries with a total of over 20 million kilometres in mileage clocked in. With XPeng planning local assembly in Malaysia by the middle of 2026, this bodes well for the PowerX to be launched in Malaysia.
The current X9 EV range in Malaysia comprises three variants with prices as follows:
- Xpeng X9 Standard Range 2WD Pro – RM270,708
- Xpeng X9 Long Range 2WD Pro – RM288,708
- Xpeng X9 Long Range 2WD Pro Plus – RM300,708
