The new Toyota FJ is a cute and rugged baby Land Cruiser

Remember the Toyota FJ Cruiser? Well, it’s no longer the big off-roader we knew. Toyota has unveiled the all-new Land Cruiser FJ – essentially a “baby Land Cruiser“. This off-roader sports a cute yet rugged exterior and marks the return of the iconic “FJ” nameplate, which was first used on the original Toyota Land Cruiser when it debuted in 1950.

Measuring 4,575 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, and 1,960 mm tall, with a 2,580 mm wheelbase, the Land Cruiser FJ is a smaller than both the larger Land Cruiser 300 Series and the preceding Toyota FJ Cruiser.

Built on the IMV platform shared with the Toyota Hilux, the Toyota says the Land Cruiser FJ has wheel articulation capability similar to the 70 Series Land Cruiser. Furthermore, its shorter wheelbase (270 mm less than the 250 Series) provides “excellent mobility” and a tight turning radius of just 5.5 metres.

Even though it’s much smaller, the Land Cruiser FJ still retains the retro-inspired styling cues of the old FJ Cruiser, but with a more rugged touch, clearly establishing it as the spiritual successor to the FJ Cruiser and a new model in the Land Cruiser lineup.

Toyota’s approach to this rugged aesthetic involves a rectangular body and distinctive chamfered edges with a “dice motif.” This design is most evident from the rear, where the styling, paired with contrasting black finishes, cleverly creates the illusion of a single, one-piece glass panel when viewed from afar.

Beyond aesthetics, the new FJ fixes some of the old model’s known practical quirks. Crucially, the rear doors now function conventionally, allowing back-seat passengers to freely open and close them without relying on the front passenger or driver. Furthermore, the Land Cruiser FJ drops the FJ Cruiser’s quirky three-wiper setup in favour of a conventional dual-blade system.

Like its bigger siblings, the Land Cruiser FJ will be offered in two exterior designs. The main difference is the front fascia: one variant sports what is essentially a scaled-down and cutesy Land Cruiser 300 Series front end, while the other packs the retro and classic rounded headlights.

Toyota will also be offering a range of accessories, including “MOLLE” panels for attaching equipment . Although Toyota has not revealed the full catalogue, images suggest these could include a snorkel and a roof rack, in addition to other equipment.

The interior of the Land Cruiser FJ is configured as a two-row, five-seater and borrows heavily from its Land Cruiser siblings, featuring lots of easy-access physical control switches. Display specifications remain under wraps, but the layout is essentially the same horizontal dashboard design found in the 70 Series Land Cruiser. This includes a low-set cowl and instrument panel, which Toyota says enhances road visibility.

Powering the Land Cruiser FJ is a petrol 2.7-litre four-cylinder making 163 hp and 246 Nm. This is paired to a six-speed automatic, which sends power via a part-time four-wheel drive (4WD) setup.

Toyota did not disclose any pricing information for the Land Cruiser FJ. Still, the company will fully unveil the SUV at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show 2025 from October 30 to November 9, ahead of its market launch in Japan around mid-2026.
