Porsche confirms new Macan-sized ICE-powered SUV, set for 2028 launch

While the Macan is set to become a fully electric model by 2026, Porsche has committed to replacing the current internal combustion engine (ICE) model with another new petrol-powered crossover that will debut by 2028.

As reported by Automotive News, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume told investors in the H1 2025 investor’s call that the company is currently “evaluating an independent model line in the SUV segment with combustion and hybrid powertrains”. The German sportscar maker previously announced that they would be scaling back EV production due to dwindling demand, while recommitting to ICE development.

During the company’s H1 2025 earnings call, Blume described the potential Macan ICE successor as a “very, very typical Porsche for this segment and also differentiated from the BEV Macan,” adding that the company is wasting no time and is “speeding up the process there with very short development times.”

There isn’t much information yet on the new ICE SUV, but Blume hints that it could share its underpinnings with other models in the wider Volkswagen group, stating that it “would benefit from synergies”. Rumours suggest that it could be built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) that also underpins the latest third-generation Audi Q5.

This approach would be similar to that of the outgoing ICE Macan, which also shared its underpinnings with the previous-generation Q5.

On that note, the latest Audi Q5 offers a range of powertrains, starting with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder in the base model. The SQ5 features a hotter 3.0-litre V6 mild-hybrid powertrain and is likely the most suitable option for the upcoming Porsche crossover. While the Q5 is also available with a turbo diesel, it’s unlikely to be used in the upcoming Porsche model.

Blume has promised that the car will carry a fresh design featuring “Porsche’s characteristic profile”. He also added that the new car will compete in the same segment as the Macan, bearing a similar footprint.
