End of an Era: Porsche to discontinue petrol Cayman and Boxster for EV replacements


Porsche’s iconic mid-engine sports cars, the Cayman and Boxster, are approaching the end of the road. Production of the internal combustion engine (ICE) Cayman and Boxster will end by the middle of 2025. In an interview with Automobilwoche, Porsche Production Manager, Albrecht Reimold confirmed that production of the petrol-powered versions will cease by mid-2025.

This decision reflects Porsche’s aggressive shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) and signals a significant turning point for the brand. The Cayman and Boxster, known for their exhilarating handling and driver-focused experience, have been a cornerstone of Porsche’s lineup for over two decades. Their discontinuation, while a blow to enthusiasts, underscores Porsche’s commitment to a future powered by electricity.

Porsche Production Manager, Albrecht Reimold explained the rationale behind this decision: “We are moving away from popular combustion engines more quickly than originally planned.” This accelerated shift is likely driven by several factors. Firstly, increasingly stringent emissions regulations are pushing automakers to develop cleaner technologies. Secondly, the growing popularity of EVs, fueled by rising fuel costs and environmental concerns, presents a significant market opportunity for Porsche.

While the news spells the end for the petrol-powered Cayman and Boxster, Porsche isn’t abandoning the mid-engine sports car segment entirely. Reimold hinted at an “electric follow-up” for these models, suggesting that fans of the driving dynamics can look forward to a future iteration powered by electricity.
