JPJ issues recall notice for 5,155 cars involving Kia and Mercedes-Benz

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has announced a recall for 5,155 cars in Malaysia, involving specific models from Kia and Mercedes-Benz due to separate safety concerns.

The largest part of the recall involves 5,123 units of the Kia Rio manufactured between 2010 and 2017. According to JPJ, the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) circuit board in these vehicles may experience a short circuit, which could potentially cause a fire.

For Mercedes-Benz, the recall programme involves 32 units across the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, GLC, Mercedes-AMG SL, and the fully electric Mercedes-Benz EQS and EQE models manufactured between 2023 and 2025, due to two separate issues with the prefuse box.

The first issue, where the prefuse box might not have been reworked correctly, affects the following models:

  • Mercedes-Benz S580e – Nine units
  • Mercedes-Benz GLC300 4Matic – Two units
  • Mercedes-Benz EQS500 – Four units
  • Mercedes-AMG SL43 – One unit

The second issue also involves the prefuse box that may not have been reworked correctly, and will be replaced if necessary. This issue affects the recall of the following models:

  • Mercedes-Benz S580e – One unit
  • Mercedes-AMG EQE53 – Nine units
  • Mercedes-AMG EQS53 – Six units

The respective carmakers will notify owners of the affected vehicles to arrange appointments for inspection and any necessary component replacements. All costs will be fully borne by the companies.
