Smart #5 previewed in Malaysia – Largest Smart model to launch in Malaysia soon?

Smart Malaysia, distributed by Proton’s new-energy veicle arm Pro-Net, has previewed the Smart#5 at Malaysia Autoshow 2025. This fully electric (EV) SUV, unveiled in China late last year, is the company’s largest model to date.

For context, the Smart #5 measures 4,705 mm in length, 1,920 mm wide, 1,705 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. This puts the Smart #5 larger than the Mercedes-Benz GLB.

Speaking of the Mercedes-Benz GLB, if the Smart #5’s boxy profile struck you as familiar, that’s because the Smart #5 is also designed by Mercedes-Benz Chief Design Officer, Gorden Wagener, who leads the German marque’s global design team.

While some similarities can be seen on the outside, the interior of the Smart #5 is nothing like its smaller #1 and #3 siblings. If the #1 and #3 keep things minimalist and simple, the Smart #5 feels more like you’ve stepped into a spaceship, especially with those dual 13-inch touchscreen infotainment displays stretching across the dashboard.

The driver gets a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and there’s even a massive 25.6-inch AR-HUD (Augmented Reality Head-Up Display) displaying driving info right onto the windscreen.

Staying true to its name, the Smart #5 also boasts several clever storage solutions. These include a 72-litre front trunk and a hidden 110-litre compartment in the rear boot. The standard boot space is a generous 630 litres, expanding to 1,530 litres with the rear seats folded down.

In China, the Smart #5 is available in rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrains. The base RWD powertrain sees a electric motor producing 340 hp (250 kW) and 373 Nm. This is paired to a 76 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, providing a range of 570 km based on the CLTC test cycle.

There’s also an upgraded RWD powertrain producing more power at 363 hp (267 kW) motor with the same 373 Nm. This powertrain uses a 100 kWh ternary battery (NMC) battery pack for an extended range of 740 km (CLTC).

For the AWD variant, it has a 300 hp (165 kW), 270 Nm motor at the front and a 421 hp (310 kW), 440 Nm motor at the rear. Combined, this delivers a maximum output of 587 hp (432 kW), translating to 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds. Equipped with the same 100 kWh NMC battery pack, the AWD variant of the Smart #5 has a range of 580 km (CLTC).

If for some reason that’s still not enough, there’s also the Smart#5 Brabus which sees the AWD powertrain upgraded to produce 646 hp (475 kW), allowing the SUV to sprint to 100 km/h from a standstill in 3.8 seconds.

Smart#5 Brabus

Equipped with a 100 kWh battery pack, the Smart #5 Brabus offers a range of 540 km (WLTP). Built on an 800V architecture, it supports DC fast charging at up to 400 kW, enabling a 10-80% recharge in just 18 minutes.

As the performance-focused Brabus model, the Smart #5 boasts exclusive Brabus styling elements. These include 21-inch Brabus Monoblock Z wheels, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel featuring illuminated Brabus lettering, a microfiber roof lining, sport pedals, Brabus interior badging, and ventilated and heated rear seats.

In terms of safety, the Smart #5 is equipped with eight airbags as standard and is equipped with Smart Pro Assist 3.0 intelligent driving assistance systems (ADAS) powered by two OrinX processors. These include features such as:

  • Traffic jam assist (TJA)
  • Blind-spot monitoring (BSM)
  • Lane change assist (LCA)
  • Parking Assist
  • Forward/rear collision mitigation

With Smart Malaysia previewing the Smart #5 at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025, albeit in a left-hand drive (LHD) configuration, a local launch is likely on the horizon, though the exact timing remains uncertain. The question now is, how much will the Smart #5 in Malaysia cost?
