GWM Tank 500 launched in Malaysia – luxury offroader with 2.0T hybrid powertrain, RM329k


After a lengthy preview period (since December last year at KLIMS 2024!), GWM Malaysia has now finally launched the Tank 500 here on our shores at Malaysia Autoshow 2025.

The “luxury off-roader” will be fully imported (CBU) from Thailand, with a sticker price of RM328,800 on-the-road and without insurance.

Measuring 5,078 mm in length, 1,934 mm in width, and 1,905 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm, the GWM Tank 500 is undeniably a chonker of an SUV. Its large size is complemented by a robust and imposing design, highlighted by its massive chrome-plated grille up front – although some may find some (read: significant) resemblances to the J200-generation Land Cruiser.

In terms of standard equipment, the GWM Tank 500 in Malaysia comes with:

Contrasting the macho-looking exterior design is the cabin of the Tank 500, which can only be described as luxurious. It even comes with a physical clock on the centre console – which we all know is the true mark of a luxury vehicle!

The GWM Tank 500 is a seven-seater SUV with a 2-3-2 seating configuration, with buttons found in the cargo area and side door trims to electronically recline the third-row seats for more storage space.

The GWM Tank 500 marks the arrival of the first hybrid powertrain in a Tank model here in Malaysia, powered by the 2.0-litre turbocharged HEV system from the marque’s “Hi4-T” technology family.

Billed as a “luxury offroader”, the Tank 500 is built on a ladder frame chassis, offering more ruggedness to take on more diverse surfaces. It boasts an approach angle of 30 degrees, comes with three locking differentials (front, rear, central lock), and even innovative features such as the “Tank Turn” system, off-road cruise control, transparent chassis view, and a whopping 11 different driving modes to enable a more effortless off-roading experience.

The off-road-focused SUV also still comes with a full suite of advanced driver assistance features, including:

A 360-degree surround view monitor comes as standard (with transparent chassis view), as does six airbags.

The GWM Tank 500 is available in one single CBU variant, priced at RM328,800 on-the-road and without insurance. Included in the price is a six-year/unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, eight-year/200,000 km power battery warranty, as well as a lifetime powertrain warranty (engine, transmission, HEV components) limited to first-hand private owners.

Early bird buyers will also receive a limited-time offer for five years of free service maintenance (inclusive of labour of parts), as well as a limited-edition “premium gift set”, exclusively for the first 100 owners.
