Proton returns to Singapore – eMAS 7 previewed at The Car Expo 2025 ahead of August launch

Proton has marked its reentry into Singapore with the Proton eMAS 7 – its first presence in the island nation in over a decade. After its first international debut in Nepal in March, the eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) was recently previewed at The Car Expo 2025 in Singapore ahead of its launch, reportedly sometime in August 2025.

Not much official information has been divulged, but the national carmaker noted that the Proton eMAS 7 was previewed in two variants – Prime and Premium – similar to what is currently offered here in Malaysia. In Singapore, buyers can choose from six colours: Platinum Silver, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, Quartz Rose, Lithium White, and Moyu Black.

Here in Malaysia, both variants produce 218 hp and 320 Nm from a front-mounted electric motor. The 218 hp (160 kW) mark is notable, because that means the eMAS 7 in Singapore – if it follows the Malaysian specification – will only qualify for the more expensive Category B Certificate of Entitlement (COE).

Certain electric carmakers, including Tesla, has introduced special versions of their cars with output limited to under 150 kW in order to satisfy the Category A requirements.

In performance terms, the 218 hp translates to a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.9 seconds (Prime) and 7.1 seconds (Premium). Top speed for both is 175 km/h. The Prime has a 49.52 kWh battery with a 345 km WLTP range, while the Premium’s 60.02 kWh battery offers 410 km WLTP range.

To recharge, both variants can be topped up from 30-80% in 20 minutes using DC fast charging, with the Prime variant supporting up to 80 kW, and the Premium up to 100 kW. With an 11 kW AC wall charger, full charges take 4.9 hours (Prime) and 6.1 hours (Premium).

Proton has appointed VINCAR Group as their authorised distributor in Singapore, aiming to boost EV sales as the country ramps up EV adoption. According to Proton, the EV market in Singapore is promising with a growth of 12% to 18% from 2022 to 2023 and is expected to reach 55% by 2027.

To support rising EV numbers, Singapore plans to build 12,000 charging points in 2,000 housing and development board (HDB) car parks by 2025, growing to 60,000 chargers by 2030. The government targets 100% clean energy vehicle adoption by 2040, aligning with its net-zero emissions goal.

Along with these targets, Singapore aims to have 100% of vehicles in the nation to run on cleaner energy by 2040 in support of Singapore’s net-zero emissions goal by reducing land transport emissions.

In Malaysia, the Proton eMAS 7 starts at RM109,800 for the Prime and RM 119,800 for the Premium on-the-road without insurance. Because of the Category B COE prices, it has been reported that the eMAS 7 in Singapore could be priced north of SGD173,988 (approx. RM566k) – a whopping five times more expensive than what it is here in its home country.

Sgcarmart reported that Proton is offering a “Founders Edition” promotion for the first 99 cars sold on the island with a discount of SGD20,000 (approx RM65k). The rebate will essentially bring the price down to the realm of other EVs within the Category A COE grouping, but will the eMAS 7 – that recently claimed the title of Malaysia’s best-selling EV with over 6,000 bookings – see the same level of popularity across the bridge?
