Co-developed with Changan, the EZ-60 is Mazda’s answer to the Tesla Model Y

Mazda has unveiled the new fully electric (EV) Mazda EZ-60. This stylish new EV SUV is essentially the production version of the Mazda Arata concept, showcased at the 2024 Beijing International Motor Show.

The Mazda EZ-60 EV represents the second vehicle developed through the partnership between Mazda and Changan Automobile. The first, the Mazda EZ-6 (Mazda 6e in export markets outside of China), is a heavily re-engineered version of the Deepal SL03. In a similar vein, the Mazda EZ-60 draws its foundation from the Deepal S07, which is also set to be introduced in Malaysia very soon.

Naturally, the Mazda EZ-60 will also compete against the Tesla Model Y when it’s launched, in the heavily-contested D-SUV EV segment.

The EZ-60 is styled according to the latest evolution of Mazda’s signature Kodo design language, with a sleek, hatchback-inspired roofline similar to the Mazda CX-30. At the front, a pair of sleek daytime running lights (DRLs) extend to illuminate the signature trapezoidal grille, complete with an illuminated Mazda emblem. The headlights are seamlessly integrated into a boldly sculpted front bumper.

In a departure from traditional side mirrors, the Mazda EZ-60 employs sleek side-view cameras, complemented by flying buttress-styled C-pillars that channel airflow. According to Mazda, the car’s overall design is engineered to minimise drag coefficient and optimise battery pack cooling. The D-pillar even has a flow-through buttress to do just that – like you’d see on a supercar!

Powertrain details for the Mazda EZ-60 remain under wraps, although it probably won’t differ too much from the Deepal S07, which also shares a similar powertrain setup to the Mazda EZ-6/6e. In Thailand, where the Deepal S07 was launched last year, two variants are offered: Standard Range and S07 L.

Powering the Standard Range is a single rear-mounted electric motor that generates 258 hp (190 kW) and 320 Nm. This is paired with a 66.8 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) ternary battery that provides 485 km (NEDC) of range.

Somewhat surprisingly, the higher-spec S07 L variant offers a slightly reduced 218 hp (160 kW) but the same 320 Nm of torque. It’s equipped with a larger 79.97 kWh NMC battery pack that increases the range to 560 km (NEDC).

Like the Mazda EZ-6, we are also expecting the EZ-60 to be exported to international markets after its debut in China. It has been reported that Mazda has recently trademarked the CX-6e name, which could hint at the model’s export nameplate.
