Deepal S07 previewed in Malaysia – Tesla Model Y rival with up to 258 hp, 475 km WLTP range

Alongside the XPeng X9, Bermaz Motor also brought out the Deepal S07 fully electric (EV) SUV in a preview to the media yesterday, marking the marque’s first official appearance in Malaysia since the distributorship for the Chinese marque was awarded to the newly incorporated Bermaz Changan entity.

The S07 is one of two models already confirmed for Malaysia, the other being the smaller S05. It’s a fairly large D-segment SUV, competing against the likes of the Tesla Model Y and Xpeng G6 with a similar footprint. That said, the Deepal S07 has a more angular design compared to the other two, which makes it look less bulbous and a lot sleeker in person.

The Deepal S07 is already available in Thailand early last year. There, the D-segment EV SUV is offered in two different variants, including a “standard range” option with a 66.8 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) ternary battery offering 485 km of range (NEDC), paired to a single motor on the rear axle rated for a maximum output of 258 hp (190 kW) and 320 Nm of torque.

A higher-end variant called the “S07 L” brings the range up to 560 km (NEDC) thanks to a 79.97 kWh NMC battery pack, but intriguingly its rear motor’s outputs are lower at 218 hp (160 kW) and 320 Nm.

No detailed specifications of the Deepal S07 for Malaysia has been provided just yet, although we expect it to be fairly similar to what’s on offer in both Thailand and Singapore. For the latter, only one variant is available with similar powertrain specifications to the S07 L in Thailand, although the range is quoted at 475 km (WLTP).

In terms of standard equipment, the display car here comes with fancy LED lighting and 20-inch wheels on the outside, alongside frameless windows on all four doors. The interior is fairly minimalist as per modern EV standards, with everything centred around the 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display.

The rear passengers do at least get a touch-based climate control panel in the centre, and Deepal also claims that the pleated leather seats offer an “extravagant yacht like experience”.

We don’t know yet when the Deepal S07 will be launched here in Malaysia, but seeing that the car has now been previewed, we don’t think it’ll be too much longer of a wait. The only question then is pricing – will it be employing the same strategy as the XPeng G6 to significantly undercut the Tesla Model Y? My money says yes.
