No longer a pure EV brand – Zeekr jumps on the PHEV bandwagon with 2 new models in 2025

Demand for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) appears to be on the rise, with BYD selling some 2.48 million PHEVs in 2024. Seeking a share of this growing market, Zeekr is reportedly planning to launch two PHEV models in 2025 – despite previously being introduced as a “pure electric vehicle (EV) brand”.

Zeekr previously offered only EVs in its lineup, such as the Zeekr X, Zeekr 009, and the Zeekr 7X. While the X (not the website!) and 009 are currently sold in Malaysia, the 7X is slated for a local launch in 2025.

According to CarNewsChina, Zeekr’s new PHEV models will include a large flagship SUV, codenamed DX1E, and a mid-size SUV, codenamed EX1E. Both SUVs will be available with fully electric and PHEV powertrains.

Not much is known about Zeekr’s new PHEV powertrains. However, Geely Group President, Andy An, has stated that the new PHEV powertrain will be called the “Super Hybrid” system and will combine the advantages of EVs and PHEVs.

The Super Hybrid system is reportedly a slightly revised version of Geely’s NordThor EM-i PHEV powertrain. The NordThor EM-i consists of a 1.5-litre engine, which Geely claims has the world’s highest thermal efficiency rate, and an 11-in-one electric drive. This setup reportedly offers a combined range of 2,390 km and fuel consumption of 2.67 L/100km.

While the prospect of fewer trips to the petrol station is exciting, Malaysians will likely have to wait for models equipped with the Super Hybrid system, due to our right-hand drive requirements that would necessitate extra development. However, the fully electric Zeekr 7X is expected to launch in Malaysia sometime in 2025.

Zeekr 7X

In China, the Zeekr 7X is offered with two battery options: 75 kWh and 100 kWh. The larger 100 kWh battery provides a CLTC-rated range of up to 705 km. A dual-motor setup delivers a whopping 646 hp and 710 Nm, enabling a 0-100 km/h time of just 3.8 seconds. With DC fast charging, charging from 10-80% takes just 10.5 minutes.

The Zeekr 7X also boasts an impressive suite of safety systems, including the “Haohan Intelligent Driving 2.0” ADAS system, which offers a degree of self-driving capability.
