2024 BYD Dolphin facelift in China finally ditches the “Build Your Dreams” script

Ahead of its launch, the 2024 BYD Dolphin facelift has now been revealed in full, courtesy of our “friends” at the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (there really are no secrets in China, eh?).

Updated as part of a mid-lifecycle refresh, the 2024 BYD Dolphin has been given a redesign, alongside slight dimension and powertrain changes.

The new redesign has given the BYD Dolphin a slightly sleeker look on the outside, with the “grille” panel now appearing a little slimmer (and more three-dimensional), bookended by the more svelte-looking headlights.

These are paired to a restyled bumper featuring cleaner and sharper lines, while the headlights also extend rearwards via a black trim to give the compact hatchback a unique split look, which should work well with the two-tone paint jobs offered here in Malaysia.

Round the back, the bumper has once again been cleaned up for a more elegant look, while the taillights also gain a new lighting graphic alongside a new curvier enclosure. But the main change here – for us at least – is that the old “Build Your Dreams” script in-between the tail lights have now been swapped out for the BYD emblem. Finally!

According to MIIT data, the new 2024 BYD Dolphin facelift has also gained a slight increase in length, lining up with the global model we have here. The change was first introduced in 2023 for the Australian market, due to a redesigned front-end crash structure to obtain a five-star ANCAP safety rating. It appears the same change has now been reflected on the Chinese market car.

Powertrain wise, the 2024 BYD Dolphin in China has also gained a new mid-range powertrain option, with a single motor on the front axle making 177 hp (130 kW), joining the two existing options with 95 hp (70 kW) and 204 hp (150 kW).

Based on reports by CarNewsChina, the 2024 BYD Dolphin will continue to utilise the marque’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs. While battery capacities weren’t mentioned in the MIIT documentation, it’s likely that the batteries will remain unchanged from the outgoing model in China, which is available in both 44.9 kWh and 60.48 kWh sizes.
