3 reasons why the BYD Sealion 7 might be Tesla Model Y’s biggest threat

BYD’s latest offering in Malaysia, the BYD Sealion 7, is now on sale in two variants: the Premium at RM183,800 and the Performance at RM199,800. It’s priced to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y, with near-identical dimensions at 4,830 mm long, 1,925 mm wide, 1,620 mm tall, and a 2,930 mm wheelbase, it offers comparable space too.

But the BYD Sealion 7 brings more than just competitive pricing and size. Here are three reasons why it’s making waves in the local EV market:

Exterior and interior design

The Tesla Model Y’s minimalist design might not be to everyone’s taste. The BYD Sealion 7, however, embraces a more distinctive aesthetic, inside and out. Its “Double-U” LED headlights, “Dynamic Water Drop” LED tail lights, and sculpted bumpers give it a sporty presence that the Model Y lacks.

Inside, it continues this departure from minimalism with a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen and a separate 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver, providing a more familiar and conventional user experience than the Tesla Model Y’s futuristic, single 15-inch touchscreen setup.

Pricing

The BYD Sealion 7 undercuts the Tesla Model Y, with a starting price of RM183,800 compared to RM191,000. But the real savings become apparent when you consider Tesla’s optional extras.

Want a colour other than white? Prepare to pay anywhere from RM5,000 to RM11,000 for that eye-catching Ultra Red. Larger rims? That’ll be an extra RM10,000. And that’s before you even get to the Autopilot extras. Enhanced Autopilot adds RM16,000 to the Model Y’s price.

And if you’re dreaming of Full Self-Driving, prepare to shell out RM32,000 – on a feature that still does not currently work in Malaysia. With all the options selected, the Tesla Model Y will set you back RM244,000 – and that’s just for the base rear-wheel-drive variant!

Performance

The BYD Sealion 7 Performance, starting at RM199,800, boasts a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup that delivers 530 hp and 690 Nm, translating to a 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 4.5 seconds.

The Model Y Performance might be slightly quicker from 0-100 in 3.7 seconds and is slightly more powerful at 534 hp and 660 Nm, consider this: to get that Tesla Model Y Performance, you’ll be forking out at least RM280,000, that’s before you start adding those expensive extras.

For a head-to-head comparison, let’s look at the base rear-wheel-drive Tesla Model Y priced at RM191,000 and the Premium BYD Sealion 7 at RM183,800.

The base Model Y has a single rear motor producing 347 hp and 420 Nm, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. Its 57.5 kWh battery pack provides a WLTP-rated range of 455 km.

The Sealion 7 Premium also has a single rear motor making 313 hp and 380 Nm and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. It has a larger 82.5 kWh battery pack with a NEDC-rated range of 567 km.

It’s worth noting that the NEDC testing standard tends to overestimate real-world range, so the actual driving distance on a single charge might be lower.

While the BYD Sealion 7 might not match the Tesla Model Y’s range, or the full extent of Tesla’s Autopilot features, it offers a compelling combination of style, performance, and value that may just be the difference-maker when it comes to car shopping.

For those seeking a spacious, well-equipped EV with a distinctive personality without the Tesla price tag, the BYD Sealion 7 is a serious contender worth a closer look.
