2024 Volvo XC90 facelift leaked online ahead of September 4 reveal

The second-generation Volvo XC90 is set to undergo a second facelift update in 2024, featuring a refreshed exterior and enhanced interior technology in an effort to modernise the model as it soldiers on alongside the fully electric EX90 as an ICE-powered alternative.

Ahead of its official unveiling on September 4, though, images of the new seven-seater SUV have been leaked online. The photos were shared prematurely by Volvo Car Switzerland in a now-deleted post on its social media channels.

The facelifted Volvo XC90 has undergone a redesign on the outside, with the bulk of the changes up front, featuring a revised grille with a wider and more contemporary design. While the Volvo emblem remains prominently centred, the overall aesthetic has been updated for a cleaner, more modern appearance. The redesigned front bumper features slimmer headlights and sharper “Thor’s Hammer” daytime running lights (DRLs).

The rest of the facelifted Volvo XC90’s exterior seems to remain largely unchanged, but the interior is set to get a significant refresh, highlighted by a larger floating central touchscreen powered by Volvo’s Google-based infotainment system. It also has a new steering wheel and centre console design, which fortunately still retains some physical buttons, alongside a volume knob on the dashboard.

As it is currently, the upcoming facelifted Volvo XC90 will feature some form of hybrid technology on all variants. The range starts off with the B5 and B6 mild hybrids, while the top end model will feature a plug-in hybrid setup. All of them will feature petrol engines, though, as Volvo has ceased production of diesel powertrains earlier this year.

In the current outgoing model, the range-topping T8 twin-engine features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, paired to an electric motor on the rear axle (e-axle) and a 19 kWh battery for a total power output of 462 hp, and a pure electric range of up to 72 km.
