2024 Volvo XC90 facelift to debut on September 4

Volvo Cars is set to unveil the facelifted XC90 on September 4 in a livestream event, marking the model’s first major update in 10 years since it was first introduced in 2014.

In case you’re confused – no, this has nothing to do with the fully-electric EX90. Instead, the facelifted 2024 Volvo XC90 will coexist alongside the EX90 for the foreseeable future, to offer customers a choice between a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE, albeit electrified), or battery-electric powertrains.

From the teaser, it appears the upcoming 2024 XC90 facelift will sport a revised version of the iconic “Thor’s Hammer” light signature up front, alongside new bonnet crease lines.

It wouldn’t be at all surprising if these changes are inspired by that of the EX90, which features a more minimalist design highlighted by its pixelated daytime running lights (DRLs), in an attempt to bring the model family back in line with a more unified look.

In the Malaysian market, the current Volvo XC90 Recharge combines a 143 hp (metric) electric motor with a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine, delivering a total system output of 456 hp (metric) and 709 Nm. The updated 18.8 kWh battery pack, introduced in the 2023 model year, provides an electric range of 70 to 90 km.

Volvo’s EX90 electric SUV commenced production in June 2024 at the company’s South Carolina facility. Initially unveiled in November 2022, production was temporarily delayed in May 2023 to allow for further development of its advanced software.

Volvo Car Malaysia has already announced plans to introduce the seven-seater EX90. The company has also opened registrations of interest for the smaller EX30 model, which is expected to arrive in the Malaysian market this year.
