Dongfeng Box previewed in Malaysia – BYD Dolphin rival to launch by Oct 2024

The Dongfeng Box, also known as the Nammi 01 in China, made its Malaysian debut at a recent media preview event. As the Box’s first right-hand drive offering, it is scheduled for a local launch later this year. If you recall, last November, the Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association of Malaysia (PEKEMA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese carmaker Dongfeng Motor Corporation (DFMC), represented by China Dongfeng Motor Industry (DFMIEC).

Dongfeng and Pekema have signed a memorandum of understanding to introduce the Dongfeng Box (S31) electric vehicle to the Malaysian market. While the initial units will be imported, future plans include local assembly in Malaysia. The model, which was showcased in a pre-production state, is expected to be exported to other ASEAN countries once local production begins.

The Dongfeng Box will be a direct competitor with the BYD Dolphin. Dimension-wise, it measures 4,030 mm long, 1,810 mm wide, 1,570 mm tall, and is underpinned by a 2,660 mm wheelbase compared to the dimensions of the BYD Dolphin which measures 4,290 mm long, 1,570 mm tall, 1,770 mm wide, and is underpinned by a 2,700 mm long wheelbase.

Performance-wise, if it mirrors the China-spec, the Box is equipped with a front-mounted front-wheel drive (FWD) single motor with a maximum power of 93 hp and a peak torque of 160 Nm with a top speed of 140 km/h. According to the CLTC test results, it can support a maximum range of 330 km and 430 km.

Safety specifications for the Malaysian-spec Box have yet to be confirmed. If it reflects the China-spec Dongfeng Nammi 01, it should be equipped with Level 2 semi-automatic driving assistance, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, active cruise control (ACC), and automatic parking function.

Initially planned for mid-2024, the market launch of the Box is slightly off track. It is now planned to be launched by the end of 2024.
