Why the facelifted Isuzu D-Max is more than a pretty face

Thanks to the advanced tech car manufacturers are integrating into their vehicles, off-roading is getting easier. These proprietary systems, like Land Rover’s Terrain Response, Subaru’s X-Mode, Toyota’s Crawl Control, and Jeep’s Selec-Terrain lowers the barrier to off-roading significantly.

These innovations work by fine-tuning the engine output, transmission, and brakes, helping the driver in terms of throttle and brake modulation, allowing them to focus more on tyre placement and steering input.

Isuzu’s Rough Terrain Mode is the new kid on the block

The recently launched Isuzu D-Max comes equipped with Rough Terrain Mode (RTM) to help drivers tackle unruly paths. Of the 8 versions introduced (which you can explore here), the single cabs and 4×2 (normally the choice for commercial users to carry loads) are not equipped with this system.

Originally introduced in the MU-X in 2021, the revised RTM manages brake force and engine output better, enhancing tyre performance across rough terrains without excessive spinning.

Typically, differential locks make both wheels turn at the same rate, which can disrupt traction control systems when they are engaged. However, the revised RTM operates effectively even with the rear differential lock activated.

This allows for better control and torque transfer, ensuring that traction is maintained even under the most challenging conditions. RTM distinguishes itself by activating immediately when needed, unlike traditional traction control systems that react after detecting wheel spin.

This prompt action ensures smoother torque transfer and steady momentum, crucial for navigating through tough spots effectively. It’s a boon for novice drivers crossing rugged landscapes or climbing steep inclines.

Where’s a good place to prove the mettle of RTM?

As the platinum sponsor of the Borneo Safari International Off Road Challenge, Isuzu Malaysia is no stranger to the off-road scene in East Malaysia. While most trucks require extensive modifications to tackle most parts of the course, the facelifted D-Max is a great base to start, with its improved mud-plugging ability.
