Isuzu D-Max BEV concept unveiled – 176hp, 325Nm, launching in 2025

Ahead of its debut at the 2024 Bangkok International Motor Show, the Isuzu D-Max BEV concept has been unveiled via a press release, along with a few technical specifications. News of an all-electric D-Max first surfaced in late 2023, and its arrival has now been confirmed.

Based on the current-generation Isuzu D-Max, the Isuzu D-Max BEV concept features a closed-off front grille and the typical blue accents found on an electric vehicle (EV). The wheels get some black and blue accents and the wing mirrors are finished in black.

Kindly, Isuzu has also shared some technical specifications of this concept model, and it appears that this concept is closer to reality than the Toyota Hilux BEV concept. The first reason is that the D-Max BEV concept is equipped with full-time 4-wheel drive (4WD) instead of a rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup like the Hilux BEV. The electric 4WD system in the D-Max BEV gets the brand’s newly-developed e-axles.

Here’s what Isuzu has shared about the D-Max BEV so far:

  • Drive system: Full-time 4×4
  • Battery type: Lithium-ion
  • Battery capacity: 66.9 kWh
  • Maximum output: 130 kW (176 hp metric) (Front 40 kW, Rear 90 kW)
  • Maximum torque: 325 Nm (Front 108 Nm, Rear 217 Nm)
  • Maximum speed: Over 130 km/h
  • Maximum payload: 1,000 kg
  • Maximum towing capacity: 3.5 tonnes

Although Isuzu has shared the battery capacity of the Isuzu D-Max BEV, it hasn’t detailed the EV pickup truck’s range. We could estimate the range to be in the regions of 200-300km since the 88.55kWh Maxus T90 EV has a WLTP range of 330 km.

The performance figures of the Isuzu D-Max BEV are comparable to that of the 1.9-litre turbodiesel Isuzu D-Max (110 kW, 350 Nm) with its power output being slightly higher and its torque figure slightly lower. The 4WD system of the D-Max BEV is rear-biased with 69% of the power at the rear axle. The electric concept truck has a maximum payload of 1,000 kg and a maximum towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes.

Set to make its world debut in Thailand, the concept Isuzu D-Max BEV hints at a market-ready electric D-Max for the world. According to Isuzu, the production-version electric D-Max will be “launching in select mainland Europe markets such as Norway in 2025,” It will be “rolled out to the UK, Australia, Thailand, and other countries based on market needs and the maturity of EV charging infrastructure.”
