With Malaysia Autoshow 2024 set to happen in about a week from now, BMW Group Malaysia has decided to tease the new G60 BMW 5 Series ahead of the event. Although BMW Malaysia has launched the all-electric BMW i5 in Malaysia, it is referred to as the G60E. So, we have yet to officially welcome the G60 (without the E) into Malaysia.
The all-new G60 BMW 5 Series was teased alongside an array of other BMW Group vehicles in an Instagram story by BMW Malaysia. Among the other cars were the BMW iX2, MINI Countryman, BMW iX1, and several BMW Motorrad models. Interestingly, two “BMW 5 Series” silhouettes were teased, and we’re guessing one of them is for the petrol/MHEV/PHEV 5 Series while the other is likely the sports version of the i5, the i5 M60.

During its global debut in May 2023, the 5 Series (G60) was unveiled alongside the i5 (G60E) in the MHEV petrol 520i and MHEV diesel 520d guise. Later in September 2023, PHEV versions of the G60 5 series were unveiled. There was the PHEV 530e and the PHEV 550e xDrive. And since the charging port for the PHEV 5 Series is placed on the left-hand side, the teaser which only reveals the right profile of the car, opens the possibility of it being either MHEV or PHEV versions of the G60 5 Series.
Although darkened, the teaser by BMW Malaysia does reveal the wheel design of the upcoming G60. It appears to sit on a set of 19-inch Style 934 wheels. The wheel design also still leaves us guessing as to whether it is an MHEV or PHEV as it is available for both options.

If what we’ll be getting is the BMW 520i (48V MHEV), it will be powered by a 4-cylinder, 2.0L turbocharged engine that gets slight assistance from an electric motor. The engine itself outputs 190 hp and 310 Nm while the electric motor puts out 18 hp and 200 Nm.
Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain enables the 520i to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. The car also has a top speed of 230 km/h.

If it’s the 530e (PHEV) that will be coming to the auto show, it will also be powered by the same 4-cylinder 2.0L turbocharged engine (190 hp/310 Nm) but will get a more powerful electric motor that puts out 184 hp and 250 Nm. Combined, the PHEV’s maximum system output is 299 hp and 450 Nm.
The PHEV 530e also gets an 8-speed automatic transmission and is also rear-wheel drive (RWD). It does 0-100 km/h faster than the 520i MHEV, taking 6.3 seconds to do it. Its top speed is identical to the 520i at 230 km/h.

Lastly, if it is the 550e xDrive, it will be an all-wheel drive (AWD) PHEV G60 5 Series that gets an inline-6 turbocharged 3.0L engine that makes 313 hp and 450 Nm and an electric drive system that makes 197 hp and 280 Nm. The maximum system output is 489 hp and 700 Nm. Clearly a lot more powerful than the earlier mentioned variants, the 550e xDrive does the century sprint in just 4.3 seconds, onward to a top speed of 250 km/h.
Currently, the G30 BMW 5 Series in Malaysia is offered in the 530i and 530e variants. They are still listed alongside the new G60E BMW i5.
