2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 launched in Malaysia, RM420k – 22kW AC charging, smaller 20-inch wheels

BMW Malaysia has just unveiled the 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport, a slightly updated version of the i5 that we welcomed to Malaysia last year. Its price has been slightly bumped by RM300, putting its recommended retail price at RM399,800 and its total price with the service & repair package at RM420,100.

Among the updates to the 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport for Malaysia are:

  • 22 kW AC charging as standard (previously maxed at 11 kW)
  • Smaller 20-inch Style 939M wheels (Previously 21-inch Style 954M wheels)
  • New interior colour option – Leather Merino Silverstone
  • 4 new exterior colour options – Sophisto Grey Metallic, Oxide Grey Metallic, Cape York Green Metallic, and Fire Red Metallic.

On the outside, the only telltale sign of this updated version of the BMW i5 is the smaller set of 20-inch BMW Style 939 M wheels. Previously sitting on a set of 21-inch BMW Style 954 M wheels, the i5 has opted to downsize, perhaps for a more comfortable ride.

While we are not getting any new variants of the BMW i5 just yet, the i5 eDrive40 M Sport can now be had with 4 new colour options. Previously only offering four colour options, you can now choose between 8 colours for your BMW i5 in Malaysia with new colours such as Sophisto Grey Metallic, Oxide Grey Metallic, Cape York Green Metallic, and Fire Red Metallic.

Besides the new exterior colour offerings, the BMW i5’s interior also now comes with a new option, Leather Merino Silverstone. You now have three interior choices for the BMW i5 in addition to Leather Merino Black and Leather Merino Copper Brown.

The best update to the BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport is the new standard 22 kW AC charging capability. It seems that BMW Malaysia has listened to our complaints. With 22 kW AC charging, you can now charge the BMW i5’s 83.9 kWh battery from 0 to 100% in just 4 hours and 15 minutes. If you decide to charge it with an 11 kW charger, it will take 8 hours and 15 minutes like it used to before. DC charging is still rated at 205 kW maximum.

All else, the 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport for Malaysia remains similar to the version that we welcomed in November 2023. Which means it still gets a a single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) drivetrain that outputs 340 hp (in Sports mode) and 430 Nm (with Boost mode engaged). This electric drive system results in a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.0 seconds and a limited top speed of 193 km/h.

BMW Group Malaysia Managing Director, Benjamin Nagel said, “We began 2024 by celebrating the progress of the adoption of our electric vehicles in the Malaysian market, and we are pleased to be able to further supplement that progress by introducing more EVs that deliver the highest forms of the Premium Electric Ownership to our esteemed customer base here. With the BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport joining the ranks of the recently refreshed BMW iX xDrive50 Sport and the BMW iX M60 in terms of its upgraded charging technology, we mark this significant introduction as a testament to BMW Malaysia’s steadfast dedication to driving Sheer Electrified Driving Pleasure for Malaysians.”
