JLR teases the Range Rover Electric prototype and it screams déjà vu

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has just dropped a teaser on its upcoming all-electric Range Rover SUV, dubbed the Range Rover Electric. This isn’t the first time the model has been teased, as the company did so late last year, promising that the vehicle will deliver “V8 levels of performance”.

In this teaser, the Range Rover Electric prototype has been shown to us fully uncovered, and it looks pretty much identical to its combustion engine-powered siblings, which it will be sold alongside. As it makes its official debut, it will also be JLR’s second all-electric model, right after the Jaguar I-Pace.

The Range Rover Electric prototype has been put through multiple tests, including at extreme temperatures of -40°C in the Arctic Circle, and 50°C in the deserts of the Middle East. JLR says it has fitted the Range Rover Electric with a new traction control system to help deliver improved performance on icy and low-grip surfaces.

Rather than a traditional traction control setup based solely on the ABS unit, the Range Rover Electric distributes the wheel slip management task directly to each individual electric drive control unit. This will, as a result, reduce the torque reaction time at each wheel from around 100 milliseconds to as little as 1 millisecond.

Like its engine-powered siblings, the all-electric Range Rover is reported to be built on the same Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) and will feature an 800V architecture which should deliver some high charging speeds. The British carmaker has yet to release any detailed technical specs on this upcoming SUV just yet, therefore it is unsure what kind of drive layout it will bring. But it is safe to assume it will feature at least a dual-motor setup to enable all-wheel drive, as JLR promised this all-electric SUV will have the same off-roading capabilities as its engine-powered counterparts.

One of its closest competitors, the all-electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology, which debuted just days ago, packs a quad-motor all-wheel-drive setup. Will JLR follow suit? We shall see.

When it was teased at the end of last year, the Range Rover Electric was said to be as off-road capable as its engine-powered siblings and is able to wade through water at depths of up to 850 mm. The all-electric SUV is also said to deliver V8 levels of performance. For context, the BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 found underneath the hood of the Range Rover SV makes 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine makes 635 hp (metric) and 750 Nm, with assistance from its 48V mild hybrid system. JLR is also setting a goal to make this model the quietest and most refined Range Rover ever created.
