All-new Mercedes-Benz G580 debuts as first EV G-Class – 587hp quad-motor AWD, 473km range

The all-new Mercedes-Benz G580 has made its debut as the Three-Pointed Star’s first all-electric G-Class. Officially, the brand refers to this EV roader as the G580 with EQ Technology. Built on a ladder-frame platform, just like the regular internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered variants, the all-electric G580 will continue to be off-road-capable as always.

Despite featuring an all-electric powertrain, the all-new electric G-Class still retains its angular silhouette as well as its iconic elements. Instead of a spare wheel, it now carries a square rear storage box on its tailgate. Mercedes-Benz G580 comes with round Adaptive Multibeam LED headlights, LED taillights, and a radiator grille with four horizontal louvres.

Fitted onto the all-electric luxury off-roader is a set of aerodynamically optimised black 18-inch alloy wheels with a five-twin-spoke design. Mercedes-Benz has given the G580 a slightly raised bonnet, a new A-pillar trim, a spoiler lip on the roof, and so-called “air curtains” in the rear wheel-arch flares that contribute to optimised aerodynamics and interior aeroacoustics.

Powering the all-new all-electric Mercedes-Benz G580 is a quad-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup that puts out 587 metric hp (432 kW) and 1,164 Nm. This enables the luxury off-roader to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, and achieve an electronically limited top speed of 180 km/h.

Thanks to a 116 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack, the all-new Mercedes-Benz G580 can carry you as far as 473 km (WLTP) on a single charge. The battery is housed in a torsion-resistant casing to protect it from water and dirt intrusion. The underbody protection is made from a mix of materials including carbon to protect the battery from physical impact.

Charging that all-electric G-Class can be done at a maximum DC rate of 200 kW, which can juice up the battery from 10 to 80% in 32 minutes. AC charging can also be done at a maximum rate of 11 kW.

Mercedes-Benz has integrated three charging programmes into the G580, namely “Standard,” “Work”, and “Home”. Users can set parameters such as departure time, climate control and maximum charge level.

Underpinning the all-electric G-Class is an independent front suspension with double wishbones and a newly developed rigid rear axle. To make your off-roading adventures an easier one, the all-new Mercedes-Benz G580 can also be opted with a redesigned off-road control unit, the new Offroad Cockpit, and the “transparent bonnet” function as an option.

Aside from the off-road functions mentioned above, the German carmaker has also fitted its first all-electric G-Class with the Low Range Off-Road Gear Reduction system. Also included is the G-Turn function, which allows the driver to turn the vehicle almost on the spot on loose or unpaved surfaces, the G-Steering function that can deliver a significantly smaller turning circle when driving off-road, and the intelligent off-road crawl function which is essentially cruise control for off-roading.

To make up for the lack of engine sound, Mercedes-Benz has fitted the all-electric G-Class with the G-Roar sound experience, which has been inspired by the model family’s V8 sounds. There are also the “Aura” and several “event” sounds which can be triggered upon locking or unlocking the car.

Moving inside the all-new Mercedes-Benz G580, you get standard equipment such as Nappa leather upholstery, ambient lighting and a 12.3-inch digital instrument and infotainment display that runs on the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity are also supported.

Also included in the all-electric G-Class are the square-edged vents, the G-Class signature on the passenger grab handle, and the latest-generation Mercedes-Benz multifunction steering wheel. The trim elements are finished in open-pore natural walnut wood as standard.

Available at launch is the Edition One special edition model, featuring some extra features and exclusive design elements. On the outside, the G580 Edition One gets unique design elements like the outer protective moulding that features an insert with a blue trim strip, and the brake callipers finished in blue with the Mercedes-Benz lettering at the front.

The design box on the door is finished in body colour and black, while the side view mirror projects the “Stronger Than Time” lettering onto the tarmac as well. Customers can also choose to have the spare wheel at the rear as an option for the Edition One.

Other standard features included with the Edition One model are the AMG Line and Night Package and a set of aerodynamically optimised 20-inch AMG 10-spoke alloy wheels. The blue details of the exterior are reflected in the interior of the Edition One as well in the form of blue carbon-fibre trim elements and blue stitching.

The “regular” all-new all-electric Mercedes-Benz G580 currently retails for 142,621.50 Euros (approx. RM729,232). The Edition One model on the other hand costs 192,524.15 Euros (approx. RM984,387). Unlike the brand’s other all-electric models, the all-electric G580 does not bear the “EQ” branding at the front of its name. Could this signify the end of the “EQ” nameplate? We shall see.
