Toyota Hilux Champ to launch in Indonesia as the Hilux Rangga – Would Malaysians want it?

The Toyota Hilux Champ, a futuristic-looking commercial pick-up truck first unveiled as a concept in Thailand late last year, has now been confirmed for launch in Indonesia in “early 2024” – but with the name ‘Hilux Rangga’, reports AutoFun Indonesia.

The nameplate ‘Rangga’, which means warrior in the Javanese language, is not new to the Archipelago. It was previously used for a sportier and more rugged-looking variant of the Toyota Kijang (Unser) in the 1990s, and in fact, this very concept car was also called the ‘Rangga Concept’ when it was first displayed at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS).

The company says that it has chosen to use the ‘Rangga’ nameplate once again, as it still holds significant value in the Indonesian market. TAM Marketing Director, Anton Jimmi Suwandy said, “There are many fans who are still loyal to the Kijang pick-up and its numerous variants, so we think it’s the most suitable name for the Indonesian market.”

The Toyota Hilux Rangga will only be offered in the short-wheelbase (SWB) guise for the Indonesian market, according to TAM Head of Media Relations, Dimas Aska, speaking to OtoDriver.

Two four-cylinder engine options will be offered in Indonesia for the Hilux Rangga, namely a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine options, producing 139 hp (metric) and 183 Nm, as well as 150 hp (metric) and 400 Nm respectively. All variants are rear-wheel drive (RWD) only and can be paired with either a six-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission.

Over in Thailand, the Toyota Hilux Champ also comes in the form of a long-wheelbase (LWB) variant, along with an additional 2.7-litre petrol engine option that puts out 166 hp (metric) and 245 Nm.

TAM is currently staying tight-lipped on the Hilux Rangga’s specific launch details for the Indonesian market, but it has been confirmed that the car will make its debut by early 2024. Whether the pickup truck will be locally assembled (CKD) in Indonesia or fully imported (CBU) from Thailand remains to be seen.
