Toyota has just debuted its very first hybridized Hilux – the Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V. As its name suggests, the pickup truck is equipped with a 48V mild hybrid system.
The hybrid system consists of a 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine that is equipped with a common rail fuel injection system, a variable nozzle turbocharger, and a water-cooled intercooler.

The mill is then paired with a motor generator that utilises a belt system, as well as a 48V lithium battery that sits under the rear seats. When in isolation, the electric motor itself produces 16 hp and 65 Nm. Together with the turbodiesel engine, the system output is rated at 204 hp and 500 Nm.
There is also a new two-arm belt tensioner and a stronger belt material which contributes to providing a quieter ride and better driving experience. The Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V is also compatible with HVO100 diesel, a non-fossil fuel made from 100% renewable sources.

Exhaust emissions control measures such as a Diesel Oxidisation Catalyst, a Diesel Particulate Filter, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), and Urea Additional Injection are also included.
Toyota has also given the Hilux Hybrid a new Multi-terrain Select system which provides even better performance and control. This is achieved by giving the driver the option to adjust vehicle stability control settings according to the specific driving conditions. This can be set to an automatic setting, or the driver can choose one of five pre-set options – Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow or Rock.

The Hilux Hybrid 48V also possesses formidable water-crossing capabilities. With 310 mm of ground clearance, It can drive through water of up to 700 mm deep thanks to the waterproofing of the 48V battery and DC-DC converter.
Even though it is a hybrid vehicle, the Hilux Hybrid 48V’s towing and payload capacity has not been compromised, remaining at 3,500 kg and 1,000 kg respectively.

On the outside, the Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V looks pretty much similar to the Hilux we already know and is exclusively available in Double Cab format.
Inside, the Hilux Hybrid 48V is equipped with an 8-inch screen that comes with the Toyota Smart Connect system. There is also Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support here.

Safety-wise, the Hilux Hybrid 48V is equipped with the latest Toyota Safety Sense suite. his includes features such as Pre-collision system (PCS), lane departure control (LDA), and adaptive cruise control (ACC) with road sign assist (RSA).
The Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V will be arriving in Europe around mid-2024. It is also confirmed to be making its debut in the Australian market.
