Proton X70 fire incident: Car now in Proton’s possession, wasn’t registered

A video of a brand-new Proton X70 catching fire at a Puspakom centre went viral on social media last week. Over the weekend, Proton released a response regarding the incident and mentioned that the SUV in question is currently in its possession. It is also to be noted that the Proton X70 was not registered at the time of the occurrence.

Proton also mentioned that its engineers have started the investigation process towards the affected car while working closely with the relevant authorities. The company will also be issuing an update once all the information is obtained.

While Proton appreciates the concerned parties for sharing the information regarding the incident, the national carmaker reassures its customers that its vehicles are developed to meet the highest standards. Proton also says that its vehicles undergo stringent quality and safety inspections prior to being delivered.

The Proton X70 was originally launched in 2018 and was the brand’s first model made under its collaboration with Geely. Powertrain options are a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder TGDi petrol engine and a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder TGDi petrol engine. Both mills are paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

The C-segment SUV has undergone (two) facelift exercises thus far, with what is believed to be its third facelift model being spotted testing on Malaysian public roads. The car can also be seen wearing a new front fascia based on the 2022 Geely Boyue facelift.
