First ever Ford Ranger PHEV to launch in Australia by 2025 – 2.3L turbo petrol, 45km EV range

Ford will be introducing the first-ever Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) to the Australian market by early 2025. The pickup truck will be powered by a 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost turbo petrol engine, paired with an electric motor, which the carmaker claims will deliver more torque than any other Ranger pickup truck available on the market today.

The Ford Ranger PHEV’s rechargeable battery will allow the pickup truck to travel for at least 45 km (WLTP) in all-electric mode. Ford also claims that the pickup truck’s EV-only capability will be extremely useful for its Australian customers. This is due to most of their customers usually travelling around 40 km per day, according to research done by the carmaker.

Speaking of its battery, the upcoming Ford Ranger PHEV will be equipped with the brand’s Pro Power Onboard feature, also present in the Ranger’s bigger brother – the Ford F-150. This will allow the pickup truck to have enough energy to power remote camp worksites, for instance, by plugging the equipment into power outlets embedded in both the cargo bed and the cabin.

With this feature available, it will essentially turn the Ranger PHEV into a mobile generator that can provide exportable power to virtually any electrical tool, appliance, device, and system. However, the company has yet to release any info regarding the power outputs the pickup truck is able to churn out from its Pro Power Onboard system.

As expected from a Ford Ranger, the PHEV variant will be fitted with the brand’s four-wheel drive (4WD) system, selectable drive modes, as well as a series of advanced driver safety and driver assist features. And like the rest of the Ranger line-up, the Ford Ranger PHEV will also have a targeted maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg.

Ford Australia and New Zealand President and CEO, Andrew Birkic said, “The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid is a best-of-both-worlds solution for work, play, and family – offering customers zero-tailpipe emissions EV driving for short trips, or hybrid performance that delivers incredible on- and off-road performance.”

“The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will help our customers move into an electrified future, with the confidence and capability that only Ranger can provide. Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will join the Ford Australia line-up as our fifth electrified vehicle alongside Mach-E, E-Transit, E-Transit Custom and Puma BEV”, Birkic added.
