More than a year since Chery first announced its plan to return to Malaysia, the Chinese carmaker has now finally officially launched the Omoda 5 for our market. Locally assembled here in Kulim, Kedah, the Chery Omoda 5 in Malaysia is priced from RM108,800 for the entry level C variant, moving up to RM118,800 for the H variant.

The Chery Omoda 5 will definitely be one of the most eye-catching B-Segment SUVs here on our streets when it begins deliveries in August, thanks to the “Art in Motion” design language featuring sharp lines and unique styling touches, including the borderless grille design up front.

LED lighting and 18-inch alloys are standard across the board, but the H variant adds on several “premium” niceties including sequential turn indicators, welcome light animations, as well as the red accents all throughout the exterior.

Keeping in line with the overall design language, the interior of the Chery Omoda 5 features a sharp yet minimalist design, headlined by the twin floating 10.25-inch displays floating atop the dashboard.

Interior highlights include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a wireless charging pad, the unique ambient lighting system on the dashboard and cupholders, aswell as faux leather and fabric combo upholstery. Opt for the H variant, and you’ll gain an eight-speaker Sony Premium sound system, six-way powered driver seat with ventilation, full faux-leather upholstery, powered sunroof, and a hands-free powered tailgate.

At launch, the Chery Omoda 5 will only be offered with one powertrain option – a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-four engine that makes 156 hp and 230 Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox with nine virtual gears. Chery says that a more powerful 1.6-litre turbo variant will also be introduced at a later date, as will the fully-electric BEV variant that was first shown off in China earlier this year.

Included in the price for the Chery Omoda 5 is a seven-year/150,000 km manufacturer’s warranty, alongside five years of free labour (for servicing at authorised service centres). The first 3,000 customers will also receive an extended 10-year/1,000,000 km engine warranty package, which will be offered to other customers at RM2,000.
