Chery Omoda 5 EV specs revealed, 450km range – BYD Atto 3 rival?

In our previous article, we mentioned that the Chery Omoda 5 EV was previewed at Auto Shanghai 2023. We also confirmed that the EV SUV will be coming to Malaysia soon, either in late 2023 or early 2024, and will be a possible rival to the BYD Atto 3. What is even more interesting now is the Chinese carmaker also revealed the EV SUV’s specs.

Powering the Chery Omoda 5 EV will be a single motor that pushes out 165 kW (221 hp). This translates into 18 hp more than the BYD Atto 3. However, the Omoda 5 EV takes 7.8 seconds to do the 0-100 km/h sprint, which is 0.5 seconds longer than the BYD Atto 3.

Range-wise, the Omoda 5 EV’s 61 kWh battery will be able to carry you as far as 450 km (WLTP) on a single charge. This is basically 30 km more than what the BYD Atto 3 is able to provide. When you do need to juice up your Omoda 5 EV, it will take no more than 35 minutes to go from dead to 80% charge using a DC charger.

As for the details of the Omoda 5 EV’s exterior and interior, we have briefly covered them in our previous article as well. But just in case you haven’t read them, here is a recap for you.

Having its platform and design heavily based on the regular Omoda 5, the Omoda 5 EV essentially looks similar to its petrol-powered sibling inside and out. However, Chery has done some design changes to differentiate these two models.

This includes exterior details like the smoothen-out front bumper, more aerodynamic-looking rims, a lower grille, a body-coloured side mirror, roof rails and a slightly tweaked rear bumper design.

As for the interior, Chery has given it a floating twin-screen display, a lighter colour scheme compared to the regular model, a steering column-mounted gear selector, as well as Sony-branded speakers.

Safety-wise, the Omoda 5 EV, just like its competitors will be coming with a full suite of ADAS systems, including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and more.

However, it must be mentioned that details mentioned above are merely initial specifications. The variant(s) coming to or produced in Malaysia could come with different specifications.

For now, we can only hope goodies like the floating twin-screen and Sony-branded speakers will make it in the ones coming to Malaysia. With a good price going alongside, the Chery Omoda 5 EV should be able to give the BYD Atto 3 a good run for its money.
