Volvo EX30 to launch in Malaysia before EX90, but not so soon

Volvo is committed to a fully-electric future and its latest EVs introduced are the Volvo EX30 and the Volvo EX90. In a media session today, Volvo Car Malaysia Managing Director, Charles Frump shared with us that the small Volvo EX30 will reach Malaysia first before the much bigger Volvo EX90.

The news doesn’t really come as a surprise as production of the Volvo EX90 has been delayed till 2024 as Volvo has mentioned that it needs more time for development. The Volvo EX30, on the other hand, has just made its world debut in June this year.

While some of us may feel a little excited about this news, the EX30 won’t be making an appearance in Malaysia in 2023. It can be expected in the following years, and this is perhaps due to the process of making the EX30 a locally assembled (CKD) model.

The Volvo EX90

The Volvo EX30 is a small electric SUV by Volvo which is even smaller than the XC40 and C40. Upon its world debut, the EX30 was introduced with three powertrain options, namely the “Single Motor”, “Single Motor Extended Range”, and “Twin Motor Performance”. In its hottest iteration, the EX30 Twin Motor Performance produces 428 hp and 543 Nm. It does the century sprint in just 3.6 seconds, onward to a limited top speed of 180 km/h.

As for battery and range, the Volvo EX30 houses a 69-kWh lithium-ion battery for the Single Motor variant and a 69-kWh Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery for the Single Motor Extended Range and the Twin Motor Performance. The electric range can go up to 480 km for the Single Motor Extended Range variant.

The EX30 looks very much like a shrunken EX90 but introduces some new ideas to the brand’s interior design. Part of it being a soundbar speaker system, a stowable armrest storage, and a simplified dashboard. The Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric priced at RM278,888 in Malaysia and the smaller EX30 could be priced lower.
