Suzuki Jimny five-door makes world debut in India – Is bigger better?

The 5-door Suzuki Jimny has been unveiled at Auto Expo 2023 in India, officially making its world debut. It is the first time the Jimny has an extra two doors, and the company plans to “appeal to a wider range of customers” with this new configuration.

Previously, the 5-door Jimny has been spotted undisguised, and it has now become official, first being available in India. It will be built at Maruti Suzuki’s plant in Gurugram.

To accommodate the extra two doors, the 5-door Jimny is 505 mm longer, measuring a total length of 3,985 mm. The wheelbase has also been extended by 340 mm, now measuring at 2,590 mm. Despite the additional length, the 5-door Jimny retains its compact boxy look that we have all grown to love on the 3-door version.

Powering the 5-door Jimny is the same 1.5-litre engine that powers the 3-door version. Making 102 hp and 130 Nm, the engine is paired with either a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission.

Suzuki says that the Jimny 5-Door will provide the driving performance expected by customers from an authentic off-roader, like the 3-door Jimny. Like the 3-door, the 5-door is equipped with Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4WD system.

Inside, the cabin remains largely the same save for the addition of the second-row seats. Special rear seats and interior trim have been adopted in the rear space.

In Malaysia, the 3-door Suzuki Jimny fetches a price of RM174,900 with SST included. It is fully imported from Japan and is available in one variant only. The Malaysian-spec Jimny is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that is paired with a 4-speed automatic gearbox. It remains to be seen whether the 5-door Jimny (which is built in India) will find its way into the Malaysian market.
