Perodua sold 282k cars in 2022, no increase in car prices soon

In 2022, Perodua sold a total of 282,019 cars, showing a 48.2% growth from 2021. Production rose by 49.5% year-on-year, with a total of 289,054 cars produced. Perodua also reported 30% increase in after-sales intake going from 2 million in 2021 to 2.6 million in 2022.

Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said, “These achievements were also the local ecosystem’s shared commitment towards our customers and our collective roles in advancing this industry.”

2022 was a challenging year for Perodua as there were many obstacles such as the automotive ecosystem’s recovery from the massive flood and the shortage of workers due to spikes in Covid-19 cases at the supplier level. There was also the shortage of semiconductor chips supply and the sudden increase in raw material prices.

Dato’s Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said, “The industry did a lot of soul searching and from the learning points obtained during the pandemic and we realised that we needed to take active steps to recover in 2021 – which saw its fair share of challenges and from there to maximise the ecosystem’s potential in 2022. Our goal was to meet customers’ expectations of us– not just in terms of delivery of products and services but also in introducing greater value offerings to all Malaysians.”

Despite the challenges, 2022 has been the best year so far for Perodua and the Malaysian automotive industry in general. In December 2022, Perodua managed to average 1,000 vehicles made and registered per day.

Perodua has stated that it will maintain its vehicle prices should factors such as material prices, fuel prices, foreign exchange, and interest rates remain within acceptable levels. In lieu of the mentioned factors, other manufacturers have increased prices of their cars.

The Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer said, “For now, our priority is to deliver to those who booked their Perodua within the sales tax exemption period as the price for these vehicles will remain as per agreed until 31 March 2023 deadline.”

Moving forward, Perodua will continue to introduce new technologies in its future products and services as well as to continue to invest in innovations in its operations. The company will announce its full list of targets later this month.
