Mitsubishi Xpander leads MMM to top-three non-national car brand in Malaysia; 19,217 cars sold in FY21

Despite still being affected by the aftershocks of the pandemic, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) saw a significant rise in sales in its 2021 financial year (FY21), with a total of 19,217 vehicles delivered to new customers from April 2021 to March 2022.

The figure represents a 66% increase from the previous financial year, which the company says it achieved despite the total industry volume (TIV) shrinking by 6.7% during the period. The company also said that the sales figure helped propel it “comfortably [into] the top three spots” of the non-national automotive category.

Leading the charge for Mitsubishi’s success is the Xpander, which continues to dominate the non-national MPV segment here in Malaysia. Over the course of FY21, the company delivered a total of 9,065 Xpanders to new owners, accounting for 47.2% of its overall sales.

The Triton pick-up truck also maintained a solid market share of close to 21.4%, with 9,420 units sold during FY21. The amount also translates to a 24% increase over the same period last financial year.

“In general, the past two years have been tough on the automotive industry, not only with the rising cases of Omicron but floods that affected the Klang Valley and East Coast region, as well as parts or chips shortage,” said MMM Chief Executive Officer, Shinya Ikeda. “There were many hurdles for the industry to overcome, thus for our sales performance to grow is a significant triumph for us.”

“We take this chance to thank the Malaysian government for initiating and extending the SST exemption these last couple of years. With this, our customers could enjoy extra savings while it also gives us the time to fulfil all booking orders made,” added Ikeda.

Ikeda also added that the company is aware of the high demand from their customers to purchase a Mitsubishi before the end of the SST exemption period, currently scheduled for June 30, 2022.

“We are continuing our best efforts to meet the booking numbers, and we have already increased our production capacity while maintaining a high level of product quality. Our customers are the ones that put us here, thus providing them with utmost convenience and confidence towards the brand is our utmost priority,” he said.
