Honda Malaysia has now made 1,000,000 cars locally

Honda Malaysia has just reached a significant milestone in its history, with the rollout of its one millionth vehicle built in the Pegoh manufacturing plant in Melaka – a red Civic RS, the company’s latest model to be locally-assembled here in Malaysia.

The historic milestone is reached just short of 20 years since it begun locally-assembly here in Malaysia back in 2003, and roughly one year since the company marked its one-millionth Honda vehicle sold here on our shores.

“It has been 20 years since Honda Malaysia’s establishment in the country. We have evolved and recorded significant achievements since then,” said Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Madoka Chujo. “In March 2021, we achieved the one millionth sale unit milestone with all Malaysians. Just one year later, I am now celebrating another significant milestone with all of you – the one millionth production unit.”

“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all Honda associates and suppliers for their effort and hard work to ensure smooth production process and supply chain operations even with many challenges faced, including the COVID-19 pandemic, global chip shortage and recent flood incidents.

“With their dedication, Challenging Spirit and working ‘Together As One’’ we are able to achieve this remarkable one million production unit milestone,” she added, while also extending her appreciation to its dealer network, federal and Melaka state government, as well as its customers.

Honda Malaysia opened its No. 1 Line at the Pegoh Plant in January 2003. Built on an area of 46,543 sqm. The plant had an initial production capacity of 50,000 cars annually, and it wasn’t until the addition of the 49,190.5 sqm No. 2 Line in 2013 that brought that figure up to 100,000 units per year.

The first Honda model that rolled out from the No.1 Line was the 2nd Generation CR-V, while the No. 2 Line was introduced together with the launch of the locally-assembled Honda Jazz Hybrid back in 2014.

Uniquely, Honda is one of the very few marques in Malaysia that assembles its entire model-line-up (City, City Hatchback, Civic, Accord, BR-V, HR-V, and CR-V) locally, with the sole exception being the recently-launched Odyssey MPV.

Honda Malaysia says that the flexible production capability is in part due to its investment into a range of state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies at the Pegoh Plant, which are on par with the Honda plants in Japan.

These include the “Laser Brazing” technology, which creates a smooth and clean roofline for a sleeker exterior appearance, alongside Inner Frame Welding to enhance the car’s body rigidity, and Spray Polyurethane Foam that reduces noise and vibrations in the cabin while driving.

The Pegoh plant has also fully adopted Honda’s latest powertrain and safety technologies, which means it will be able to continue expanding the use of its e:HEV hybrid powerplants, as well as Honda Sensing and Honda Connect tech to its other models, starting with two new models slated for launch this year.
