Kia proves the new K5 is more than just a pretty face with dramatic stunt

When we first saw the all-new Kia K5 last year, we couldn’t stop singing praises for its looks – both inside and out. Kia however, wants to convince us all that its new D-segment packs a whole lot more than just a pretty face. How? By subjecting the Kia K5 to a 360-degree flat spin jump stunt, and broadcast it during the 72nd Emmy Awards telecast, of course.

Kia Motors America marketing operations director, Russell Wager said, “Partnering with the 72nd Emmy Awards puts the all-new K5 front and center during one of the most watched live television events of the year. The K5 launch is like nothing the midsize sedan category has ever seen and this latest initiative highlights the ‘It Factor’ that sets the K5 apart from everything else.”

To achieve the ambitious stunt, the driver had to enter the ramp at an angle, then swiftly kick the rear of the Kia K5 out into a slide right before it reaches the edge of the ramp. The rotational force from the slide flips the car around, landing on the rear wheels, acting as an anchor to turn the car forwards again, completing the stunt.

As the board behind the ramps suggests, the Kia K5 featured in the stunt is the GT variant, packing a 2.5-litre T-GDi engine that outputs 290 hp and 422 Nm of torque. Paired to a dual-clutch transmission, the Kia K5 GT is capable of sprinting to 100 km/h from a standstill in 6.6 seconds.

Aside from the flat spin jump, Kia also released a separate “triple threat” stunt video, featuring three K5 GTs – two jumping across the ramp, and one more underneath it doing a 180-degree spin simultaneously, ending with a cool family photo along with the tagline “boring doesn’t fly around here” at the background.
