Round 2 of Toyota Gazoo Racing Online Challenge happening 12th July

Following the success of the first ever Toyota Gazoo Racing Online Challenge, which took place between 23rd April to 21st May, UMW Toyota Motor announced that the second phase will take place on the 12th of July.

The Toyota Gazoo Racing Online Challenge utilises the Gran Turismo Sport platform on Sony’s Playstation. The initial phase saw participants as young as 6-years old compete in five different circuits around the world. In total, prize monies amounted to RM7,500 throughout the five races.

The second phase will see the top competitors from the first round go head-to-head for the final showdown. The “racers” will compete in a mini championship comprising of four different races, featuring race cars such as the Toyota GT86 Group B rally car.

As for the annual Toyota GR Velocity Esports Championship, the third installment of the event will be held sometime in August or September this year.

“The COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted the physical aspect of motor-racing but there is no reason why the spirit of competition cannot continue virtually. Gazoo Racing is a philosophy that extends beyond the racing track and that was precisely why we pursued an online presence,” said Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia’s Chief Motorsports Officer, Akio Takeyama.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has presented both challenges and opportunities, the result of which has seen e-sports and virtual racing propelled to the forefront at an unprecedented scale. The timely introduction of a regional event will certainly fuel Toyota’s momentum of pursuing an aggressive e-sports agenda in Malaysia,” said President of UMW Toyota Motor, Mr. Ravindran K.
