With the launch of the Pilot Sport 4 SUV, Michelin Malaysia has now answered the call of high-performance SUV owners with a tyre specially developed to match their vehicles. The introduction of the Pilot Sport 4 SUV also completes the Pilot Sport family comprising the Pilot Sport 4, 4 S, Cup 2 and Cup 2R.
While its asymmetrical tread pattern looks similar to that of the Pilot Sport 4, the new Pilot Sport 4 SUV incorporates a more rigid groove design for better cornering grip and longevity. It also utilises a new compound featuring innovative functional elastomers and thin silica for better grip and braking on wet conditions.
The need for tyres specifically catered to sporty premium SUVs lies in the higher kerb weights and performance envelope of these vehicles which result in increased loads, heat and wear on the tyres. Under the Pilot Sport 4 SUV’s surface lies a hybrid belt made of aramid and nylon for sharper steering response and precision, supported by high density, double casing ply for resistance against road shock damages. All tyre sizes also come with an in-built rim protector to mitigate against curb rash.
Michelin is confident that the performance of the Pilot Sport 4 SUV is superior against other premium brands based on tests conducted by independent testing and certification service providers TUV SUD and DEKRA. In areas of dry and wet braking, the Pilot Sport 4 SUV led the field and recorded a stopping distance of up to 2.7 metres shorter than competitors in the dry, and 4.9 metres shorter (when new) and up to 8.5 metres shorter (worn) against rivals in the wet.
Furthermore, it also lapped the 1.05-km track faster by a margin of 5.06 seconds and stood above other competitors in terms of longevity by lasting up to 13,000 km more on test runs measured against six other tyre brands. Do note that the Pilot Sport 4 SUV is optimised for on-road performance and isn’t suitable for heavy off-roading.
To complement the look of premium SUVs, Michelin added a subtle velvet finish onto the sidewalls of the Pilot Sport 4 SUV as part of its ‘Premium Touch’ design philosophy. There are a total of 39 sizes to fit rim diameters ranging from 17- to 23 inches with prices starting from RM 700 a piece. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV is available now at TYREPLUS and authorised dealers across Malaysia.
