Video: Things you didn’t know about Michelin!

You probably know Michelin, even if you’re not a car enthusiast – who hasn’t seen the iconic Michelin Man? But did you know that the company has been around for 135 years? They’ve seen it all when it comes to cars and tyres!

Michelin has been at the forefront of tyre technology. They were the first to introduce demountable tyres – you know, the kind where you can remove just the tyre from the wheel when you get a flat! Before this, tyres were fixed to the wheel, making roadside repairs impossible. These innovations started in racing and eventually made their way to our everyday cars.

Speaking of racing, Michelin is a household name in motorsports. Their tyres have helped win countless championships in Formula 1, World Rally Championship, and MotoGP, just to name a few. All that racing tech eventually makes its way into the tyres we use every day.

But here’s something you might not know: Michelin is also behind those famous Michelin stars that restaurateurs crave. It’s all part of the Michelin Guide, which recommends top-notch restaurants and hotels. Why would a tyre company do that? Well, the more you travel and explore, the more you drive, and the more tyres you need! Pretty clever, right?

Michelin’s expertise isn’t limited to Earth; did you know they’ve also developed a tyre specifically for the moon rover? It’s engineered to withstand the extreme lunar environment and enable future astronauts to explore the lunar surface.

Beyond tyres, Michelin is also making strides in environmentally friendly technology, particularly in the maritime industry, which contributes to 3% of global emissions. They are looking at using a retractable wind sail to help cargo ships reduce emissions. Same as sailing ships of the past, but much more advanced.

So, the next time you see the Michelin Man, remember there’s more to this iconic brand than meets the eye than just tyres.
