After taking Pipes Peak and Goodwood Hillclimb, the all-electric Volkswagen ID.R is ready for its ultimate challenge at the Green Hell. Behind the wheel of the ID.R is once again Romain Dumas, who is a four-time winner of the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.
The ID.R is now the fastest electric vehicle around the Nürburgring Nordschleife with a record-breaking lap time of 6 minutes and 5.336 seconds beating the previous record holder, the NIO EP9 by a mind-boggling 40.564 seconds.

While the EP9 is a road-legal hypercar, the ID.R is a stripped out track machine weighing just under 1,100 kg with two electric motors delivering 500 kW (680 hp) to all four wheels. The slim bodywork and massive rear wing also help it cut through the air more efficiently while keeping itself planted to the track at speeds.
Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group, Herbert Diess commented: “The Nordschleife of the Nürburgring is not only the world’s most demanding racetrack, it is also the ultimate test for production vehicles. The ID.R has mastered this challenge with great distinction and has completed the fastest emission-free lap of all time. As further proof of its impressive performance capabilities, Volkswagen’s e-mobility can now proudly call itself ‘Nürburgring-approved’.”
