“Hi Proton Iriz!”, facelifted Iriz revealed, 5 variants, March 2019 launch

Proton has officially previewed the facelifted Proton Iriz here at their Centre of Excellence in Shah Alam. The refreshed hatchback is the first Proton model in the current range to be updated since they formed their new collaboration with Geely.

Efforts have been made to tie in the current model line up to the national carmaker’s new flagship product, the Proton X70. As such, design elements and features from the X70 have trickled down to the facelifted Iriz.

Up front, the grille now features the Ethereal Bow design in chrome with the Infinite Weave motive integrated into the radiator grille. There is also a new front bumper with wider intakes and houses a pair of new LED daytime running lights (for executive variants and up). The chrome accent just above the front lip gives the refreshed Iriz a more expensive look.

Over to the rear, there is now a black finish across the upper tailgate with the PROTON name spelled out just like the X70. Coupled with the new rear bumpers, the designers say it gives the little hatchback a wider stance on the road.

There are five variants of the facelifted Iriz available at launch – Standard 1.3L MT, Standard 1.3L CVT, Executive 1.3L CVT, Executive 1.6L CVT and Premium 1.6L CVT. However, the company has not announced the asking price for the facelifted Iriz.

The Standard 1.3L MT is furnished with 14-inch alloy wheels, shark fin antenna, fabric upholstery, black headlining, two speakers and USB charging ports, new gear knob and new instrument cluster with LCD Multi-info display. Stepping up to the CVT variant and you’ll get an additional rear spoiler.

Up the Executive 1.3L CVT variant and you get a tonne more goodies such as 15-inch 10-spoke fan blade alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, 4 speakers, automatic headlamps, TFT Multi-Info Display, rear-view camera with dynamic guide lines and a 7.0-inch GKUI-based touchscreen infotainment system. The latter does not come with an integrated e-SIM hence it does not have online connected services such as music streaming and maps. The Executive 1.6L CVT further adds auto fold side mirrors.

Lastly, the top of the range Premium 1.6L CVT is the only variant to feature a black painted roof, online connected services for the infotainment system with “Hi Proton” Voice Command, frameless rear-view mirror, semi-leather seats with red stitching and a new gear lever taken from the X70.

All variants of the Iriz comes with dual airbags, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Hold Assist as well as front and rear parking sensors. The Premium variant ups the airbag count to six.

As for performance, the 1.3L variants are powered by the same 1.3-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder VVT engine pushing out 95 hp and 120 Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual or CVT sends drive to the front wheels.

On the Executive and Premium variants, the 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder VVT engine and CVT combo command a higher output of 109 hp and 150 Nm of torque.

All variants of the facelifted Proton Iriz can be had in five exterior colours – Snow White, Jet Grey, Armour Silver and Ocean Blue are new colour palettes taken from the Geely Design library while Ruby Red is the only colour carried forward from before.
