Volvo V40 T5 launched in Malaysia, gets a more powerful 245hp 2.0L turbo

Volvo’s latest range of Drive-E powertrains have found its way into the marque’s entry level hatchback model, the Volvo V40. Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) is now offering the V40 T5 with the award-winning 2.0-litre turbocharged Drive-E engine for RM192,888.00.

As with the newly launched S60 T6 (now available in just the T6 trim), the V40 model will only be offered in the single T5 trim, which means the V40 T4 and Cross Country will no longer be sold. The V40 was first launched back in 2013, and back then the T5 was powered by a 213 hp 2.0-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed Geartronic torque converter.

The new T5 Drive-E engine is now a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine (instead of the five-potter from before) which generates 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque. It’s paired to an Aisin-sourced eight-speed automatic. Unlike the S60 and XC90, there won’t be a supercharger for this variant, but the sole turbocharger is good enough to deliver usable power for everyday driving. It’s quicker in the century sprint too, taking just 6.3 seconds to get to 100km/h from standstill. Top speed is rated at 240km/h, while fuel efficiency is rated at a healthier 6.1 litres per 100km.

The V40 is assembled in Shah Alam, but it’s not the facelifted model which receives the gorgeous Thor Hammer LED headlights. But still, the Malaysian bound V40 T5 isn’t short of equipment: this comes with Dynamic Chassis, Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, Park Assist Pilot, Enhanced Blind Spot Information System, Cross Traffic Alert, and City Safety.2016-Volvo-V40-T5 (4)

The V40 T5 is available in five colours – Ice White, Ember Black, Raw Copper, Bright Silver, and Osmium Grey. On-the-road price is RM192,888.00 without insurance. All purchases of the V40 comes with a 5-Year manufacturer’s warranty including 5-Year Volvo-on-call Roadside assist.
