Perodua is set to commence local production operations of the Ativa Hybrid, marking a transition from its previous limited release. The model was initially introduced in 2022 exclusively as a subscription-only programme for a market study.
This programme was limited to 300 units nationwide, priced at RM500 per month for a five-year term, and was not available for direct purchase, with the cars fully-imported (CBU) from Japan.
The move to local assembly was confirmed by Perodua President and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad during a press conference held in conjunction with a factory tour by the Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia, Noriyuki Shikata. The company is currently finalising production timelines and pricing structures, with a formal announcement expected at a later date, as reported by Bernama.
Once we finalise all [of] those items, we will make a proper announcement at a later date. Rest assured, the hybrid [variant] of this Ativa model will be produced locally,” Zainal stated.
He further stated that for the project, Perodua has received about JPY1.5 billion (approx. RM37 million) from the Global South Fund to support Japanese hybrid technology in Malaysia.
The Ativa Hybrid features a series hybrid powertrain with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine. This engine produces 82 hp/105 Nm and serves exclusively as a generator for the front-mounted traction motor. The motor produces 106 hp and 170 Nm, delivering a claimed fuel consumption of 31.3 km/l based on the Malaysian Driving Cycle test.
