The recently launched GWM Wey G9, priced at RM269,800 on-the-road without insurance, has won over a lot of Malaysians. Barely a week after it was launched, GWM Malaysia announced that bookings for the plug-in-hybrid luxury MPV had already breached the 800 unit mark.
GWM Malaysia Managing Director, Cui Anqi, said, “We are encouraged by the strong response from Malaysian customers. For us, the bookings are more than a number; they show that customers understand what the WEY G9 stands for”. He added that the vehicle represents GWM’s vision of intelligent luxury mobility, and the early demand suggests Malaysians are ready for a new era of New Energy mobility.

Under the bonnet, the Wey G9 is powered by GWM’s Hi4 all-wheel drive hybrid system. This setup combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 150 hp and 240 Nm with two electric motors.
One is integrated into the four-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), while another is mounted on the rear e-axle. Combined, the GWM Wey G9 delivers a combined system output of 442 hp and 642 Nm. This enables 0–100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 190 km/h.
Thanks to its unique motor layout, the GWM Wey G9 is able to operate in a series-parallel configuration, governed automatically by the on-board electronics to provide the best efficiency in any driving conditions.

Equipped with a 44.2 kWh ternary lithium-ion (NMC) battery. GWM claims a total driving range of over 1,000 km (NEDC) from a single tank and full charge, with a pure EV range of up to 170 km (NEDC). The hybrid system supports 6.6 kW AC charging and up to 70 kW DC fast charging.
With AC charging, the Wey G9 takes 6.5 hours to charge from 15-100%. DC charging enables a 30–80% recharge in 26 minutes. The MPV also supports a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function up to 3.3 kW, allowing it to power external devices.

The interior of the GWM Wey G9 is configured as a seven-seater with a 2-2-3 seating layout, featuring individual captain chairs in the second row. The dashboard pairs a 15.6-inch centre infotainment screen with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display. Like all luxury MPVs nowadays, it features a 12.5-litre built-in refrigerator behind the centre console, accessible to both front and second-row passengers.
These luxurious amenities are wrapped in an exterior that might resemble the Denza D9, especially at the front with its large grille and similarly profiled headlights. However, the rear is more distinctive with its vertical taillights.
In terms of dimensions, the Wey G9 is slightly smaller than Chinese alternatives like the Denza D9, XPeng X9, and Zeekr 009, as it is based on the short-wheelbase version of the Wey Gaoshan. Even so, at 5,050 mm long, it is still slightly larger than the ubiquitous Toyota Alphard.
