UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has commenced local assembly of hybrid batteries for its electrified models at its Bukit Raja manufacturing facility in Klang. The new production line was announced during the launch of the Toyota Vios Hybrid Electric (HEV), the second locally assembled (CKD) model featuring the Toyota Hybrid System (THS).
The new dedicated battery production line can produce up to 30,000 battery units annually, with 97% of the battery components assembled locally. This expansion creates high-value jobs and provides local workers with advanced electrification training, strengthening Malaysia’s role in the regional automotive supply chain, UMWT says.
To ensure that every battery meets Toyota’s global standards for Quality, Durability, and Reliability (QDR), the assembly line features intelligent foolproof systems, automated inspection processes, sound-checker functions, battery performance testing, and full traceability throughout production.
“The Vios Hybrid represents an important step forward in making electrified mobility more inclusive in Malaysia. As our most accessible hybrid model, it reflects Toyota’s Best in Town approach by delivering advanced hybrid technology into a car Malaysians already trust and rely on every day,” said UMWT President Datuk Ravindran K.
“At the same time, our investment in local hybrid battery assembly reinforces our commitment to Mobility for All. By building key electrification capabilities locally, we are supporting national sustainability goals, strengthening local industry, and ensuring more Malaysians can benefit from reliable, high-quality hybrid mobility,” he added.

The Toyota Vios HEV is available in two variants, the 1.5 HEV and the 1.5 HEV GR-S, priced from RM103,800 and RM109,900, respectively. It features the fourth-generation THS series-parallel powertrain, pairing a 91 hp/121 Nm 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle engine with an 80 hp/141 Nm electric traction motor and the locally assembled 0.7 kWh lithium-ion battery.
This setup produces a combined 111 hp and sends power to the front wheels via an E-CVT that allows the engine and motor to drive the car individually, simultaneously, or with the engine acting as a generator, depending on which mode is most efficient for the driving conditions. In return, the Vios HEV boasts a fuel consumption figure of just 3.6 L/100 km.
To provide long-term ownership confidence, UMWT includes a five-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty. Furthermore, the locally assembled hybrid battery, inverter, and power management control unit are covered by a dedicated eight-year unlimited mileage warranty. For owners seeking extended protection, there is an optional two-year hybrid warranty extension available for purchase, which brings the total coverage for the hybrid system to 10 years.
