Mazda CX-6e goes global with European debut – 258 hp RWD EV, up to 484 km range

The Mazda EZ-60 was first unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in 2025 as the second model to emerge from Mazda’s joint venture with Changan Automobile. Following in the footsteps of the Mazda 6e (marketed as the EZ-6 in China), the electric SUV has now made its way to Europe, where it officially debuts on the international stage as the Mazda CX-6e.

The Mazda 6e has been relatively well received in Europe, with more than 7,000 units sold across the continent since its launch. Mazda is looking to capitalise on this momentum with the CX-6e, which plays a key role in the brand’s strategy to expand its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio and better meet growing consumer demand for electric SUVs.

Much like its sedan sibling, the CX-6e is based on Changan Automobile’s EPA electric vehicle architecture, and is closely related to the Deepal S07 mid-size SUV. While the model is offered in China as both a range-extender EV (REEV) or a fully electric vehicle, only the pure EV variant will be offered in Europe.

In European specification, the CX-6e is powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 258 hp and 290 Nm of torque. Energy is supplied by a 78 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, delivering a WLTP-rated driving range of up to 483 km — noticeably lower than the 600 km claimed under China’s less stringent CLTC test cycle. This setup enables a 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.9 seconds, with a top speed capped at 185 km/h.

Charging is supported at up to 195 kW of DC fast charging, which allows for a 10-80% charge in just 24 minutes. More conservatively, it also supports up to 11kW of AC charging, completing a full charge in 8.5 hours

Much like its Chinese-market counterpart, the Mazda CX-6e sold in Europe measures 4,850 mm in length, 1,935 mm in width and 1,620 mm in height, riding on a 2,902 mm wheelbase. This makes it slightly longer but narrower than its chief rival, the Tesla Model Y, positioning it neatly between Mazda’s own CX-60 and CX-80 in terms of footprint.

Up front, it adopts a sharp, pointed nose with a closed-off grille — a necessity for an EV — framed by a newly introduced illuminated winged grille surround. This is seamlessly integrated with a slim, split-headlamp arrangement, where the main lighting elements are positioned lower on the bumper and subtly tucked into the side air vents.

Along the sides, the CX-6e presents a sleek and sporty profile, accentuated by a swooping gloss-black roofline that flows into a slim pair of L-shaped taillights at the rear. Mazda says aerodynamics play a key role in the design, with the CX-6e featuring a total of nine air ducts that channel airflow through the vehicle, including openings at the leading edge of the closed-off grille and within the rear bodywork. One particularly interesting aerodynamic detail is the use of the “flying buttress” C-pillars, reminiscent of supercars like the Ford GT, which help guide air towards the rear for improved efficiency.

The Mazda CX-6e is offered in nine exterior colour options, with the headlight colour, of course, being the debut colour Nightfall Violet. Higher-end variants are treated to 21-inch “petal” alloy wheels, which look great, but will reduce the total range to 468km under the same testing cycle.

Inside, the car takes on a simplistic look that is inspired by “Ma”, the Japanese concept of negative space, with silver and gloss black trim, and Maztex faux leather upholstery. Most prominently, the dashboard features a massive 26-inch touch screen that almost looks like the Chaudai tables in traditional Japanese tea rooms.

The central touchscreen houses most of the vehicle’s key functions, including climate control and media, and supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is complemented by a large head-up display, as well as “Hey Mazda” voice commands, allowing drivers to interact with the system without constantly reaching for the display. A customisable dual-split layout further enables the front passenger to share screen functions.

The Mazda CX-6e is offered in three interior colour themes. Takumi models are available in either Warm Beige or Black Maztex upholstery, while the range-topping Takumi Plus features a distinctive two-tone Amethyst and White Maztex finish. An illuminated wing-shaped trim element forms part of the ambient lighting system, which offers a choice of 256 colours.

Beyond aesthetics, the CX-6e introduces several thoughtful convenience features. The vehicle can be set into one of four operating modes, including a Pet Comfort mode that maintains cabin conditions when the driver needs to step away briefly. Mazda has also incorporated gesture-based controls, allowing drivers to perform simple hand motions, such as an “OK” sign to navigate home or a “finger heart” gesture to save a song to their favourites.

Audio duties are handled by a 23-speaker, 1,280-watt premium sound system with integrated headrest speakers for the driver and front passenger. Interestingly, each headrest speaker can be paired to a separate Bluetooth device, allowing front occupants to listen to different audio sources or take phone calls independently without disturbing other passengers.

Complementing this is the Mazda CX-6e’s dedicated smartphone app, which enables a range of remote functions, including Bluetooth key sharing and battery charge management.

Mazda says the CX-6e features nine airbags and a network of cameras, millimetre-wave radar and ultrasonic sensors. This allows for a full suite of driver assistance systems, such as Smart Brake Support, Lane Keeping Assist, and Blind Spot Monitoring.

There is no confirmation yet on whether the Mazda CX-6e will make its way to our parts of the world, but a right-hand drive layout has already been confirmed as the model will indeed be introduced in Australia. For now, the arrival of its sedan sibling appears more likely in the near future, having already gone on sale in Thailand.
